Abstract: High-speed backplane connectors systems for mounting a substrate that are capable of operating at speeds of up to at least 25 Gbps, while in some implementations also providing pin densities of at least 50 pairs of electrical connectors per inch are disclosed. Implementations of the high-speed connector systems may provide ground shields and/or other ground structures that substantially encapsulate electrical connector pairs, which may be differential electrical connector pairs, in a three-dimensional manner throughout a backplane footprint, a backplane connector, and a daughtercard footprint. These encapsulating ground shields and/or ground structures prevent undesirable propagation of non-traverse, longitudinal, and higher-order modes when the high-speed backplane connector systems operates at frequencies up to at least 30 GHz.

  • Patent number: 7753731
Abstract: An electrical connector includes a wafer formed with a ground shield made from a non-conductive material made conductive with conductive particles disposed therein, thereby eliminating the necessity of the metal ground shield plate found in prior art connectors while maintaining sufficient performance characteristics and minimizing electrical noise generated in the wafer. The wafer housing is formed with a first, insulative housing at least partially surrounding a pair of signal strips and a second, conductive housing at least partially surrounding the first, insulative housing and the signal strips. The housings provide the wafer with sufficient structural integrity, obviating the need for additional support structures or components for a wafer. Ground strips may be employed in the wafer and may be formed in the same plane as the signal strips. The second, conductive housing may be connected (e.g., molded) to the ground strips and spaced appropriately from the signal strips.

Abstract: Disclosed are methodologies for defining matched-impedance footprints on a substrate such as a printed circuit board, for example, that is adapted to receive an electrical component having an arrangement of terminal leads. Such a footprint may include an arrangement of electrically-conductive pads and an arrangement of electrically-conductive vias. The via arrangement may differ from the pad arrangement. The vias may be arranged to increase routing density, while limiting cross-talk and providing for matched impedance between the component and the substrate. The via arrangement may be altered to achieve a desired routing density on a layer of the board. Increasing the routing density may decrease the number of board layers, which tends to decrease capacitance and thereby increase impedance. Ground vias and signal vias may be arranged with respect to one another in such a manner as to affect impedance. Thus, the via arrangement may be altered to achieve an impedance that matches the impedance of the component.

Abstract: An electrical connector includes a header connector and a socket connector configured to mate with the header connector. The header connector includes a plurality of signal pins and may include a plurality of shield blades. The socket connector includes a plurality of conductive paths, each conductive path being coupled to a signal contact, and may include a plurality of first shields. The plurality of signal pins and the plurality of conductive paths and signal contacts are configured to form a plurality of transmission lines. The plurality of shield blades or the plurality of first shields are configured to be electrically grounded and provide interrupted shielding of the plurality of transmission lines when the header connector and the socket connector are in a mated configuration.

Abstract: A shield connector includes a housing that has a metal terminal, a conductive inner shield shell that contains the housing, and a conductive outer shield shell that contains the inner shield shell. The inner shield shell includes a first shell body in a tubular shape for covering an outer face of the housing. The outer shield shell includes a second shell body in a tubular shape, and a fixing portion which fixes the inner shield shell. The fixing portion has an annular wall which is formed inside of the second shell body along in a circumferential direction of the second shell body. An inner face of the annular wall is tightly face-contacted on an outer face of the first shell body of the inner shield shell over an entire circumference of the outer face of the first shell body.
