Patent number: 4708672Abstract: A boat stabilizer is disclosed for substantially eliminating "porpoising" or up and down movement of the bow portion of a boat as the boat is moving through the water. The stabilizer includes a wedge-shaped member formed on an adjustably mounted trim tab located on the underside of an anti-cavitation plate of an outboard motor. The wedge-shaped member has a downwardly inclined lower surface extending generally laterally from and perpendicularly to a fin-shaped member of the trim tab. Movement of the boat through the water imparts a force against the downwardly inclined surface to effect a generally vertical torque on the boat substantially eliminating porpoising of the boat in a given speed range. The force imparted against the downwardly inclined surface is proportional to the angle of attack of the downwardly inclined surface so that upward displacement of the bow of the boat moving through the water is opposed by a proportionately greater force on the downwardly inclined surface.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1986Date of Patent: November 24, 1987Inventors: L. Patent number: 4265626Abstract: A trimming wedge is disclosed to trim a propeller driven boat for better performance. The wedge is fixed at its base to the center shaft housing of a propeller driven power boat. The trimming wedge extends approximately the length of one blade of the propeller and is positioned in front of and in line with the propeller blade. The trimming wedge or vane splits the water in front of the propeller so that the blade of the propeller passes through a void in the water. For example, when the wedge is positioned vertically downwardly from the shaft housing, the void occurs when the clockwise arc of the blade is in about the downward four o'clock to eight o'clock position when viewed from the rear. A trimming wedge with the proper wedge angle neutralizes the tendency of the propeller to "walk" the boat sideways or to the right with a clockwise turning propeller, thus transferring the side load thrust to forward thrust when the boat is propelled through the water, resulting in an increase in forward speed.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Inventor: John C. Perry
