  • Patent number: 4666420
Abstract: The present invention relates to a front wheel drive toy car having front wheels for driving and changing direction which includes a chassis and a lifting rod connected to the chassis for supporting a rear axle. The car includes a hinge for pivotally securing the lifting rod so as to allow the lifting rod to move away from and toward the chassis, a setting device connected to the lifting rod for setting a pivot position, and a bumper arranged at a front of the chassis for preventing forward tumble of the car over a front axle when forward movement is suddenly changed to backward movement. The swing angle of the lifting rod is set at a position such that the car will tumble forward toward the front axle upon a sudden direction change from forward movement to backward movement.

  • Patent number: 4655724
Abstract: A steering and drive system for toy vehicles is disclosed. Independent gear trains for wheels on opposite sides of the toy vehicle are utilized in combination with a single reversible motor to either rotate all wheels in the same direction to move the vehicle in a straight line or, by reversing the direction of the motor, to rotate wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle in opposite directions causing the vehicle to turn. Wheels on one side of the vehicle are connected to a main gear and the direction of rotation of such wheels is completely dependent upon the polarity of an electric power source applied to the motor. Wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle are indirectly connected to the main gear by a movable control gear which is urged to engage either an auxiliary gear or a second side drive gear so that the wheels rotate in only a single direction regardless of the direction of the motor.

  • Patent number: 4573943
Abstract: A toy vehicle propelled by a bi-directional, miniature d-c motor, coupled by a clutch through a gear train to a wheel axle. A manually-operated shift stick mechanism is operatively linked both to the clutch and to a polarity-reversing switch interposed between the motor and a battery. The arrangement is such that when the stick is in neutral, the battery is disconnected and the clutch is disengaged, whereby the vehicle is then free rolling. When the stick is put in its forward position, the clutch is engaged to couple the motor to the gear train and the switch is operated to apply voltage to the motor in a polarity causing the vehicle to travel in the forward direction. When the stick is put in its reverse position, the clutch is again engaged and the switch is operated to apply voltage to the motor in the reverse polarity, causing the vehicle to travel in the opposite direction.

The vehicle has the following wheels: two rear drive wheels, one front steerable wheel, and two upright-axle wheels at the sides near the front steerable wheel enable the powered vehicle to swerve against either tire sidewall on command, and to some extent to climb it, steering the tire and driving it. Abstract: A toy work vehicle propelled by a bi-directional d-c motor in a forward or reverse direction depending on the polarity of battery voltage applied thereto, the vehicle including a power take-off device driven by the same motor to raise or lower a load. A gear shift mechanism operatively coupled either to the wheel axles or to the power take-off device, is controlled by a shift stick which in neutral operatively couples the motor only to the power take-off device. • Patent number: 4553947
Abstract: A shift mechanism for a motorized toy includes a shift lever which is mounted on the toy so as to be able to move back and forth along an X axis and back and forth along a Y axis. The toy includes an electric motor and electric power supply for powering the same. A gear train connects the electric motor to an output shaft. A shift mechanism is connected between the shift lever such that movement of the shift lever along one of the X or Y axes shifts certain of the gears in the gear train to control the speed of the output of the output shaft. Movement along the other of the axes of the shift lever controls an electric switch which governs both the polarity of the current supplied to the motor to provide for both forward and reverse rotation of the output shaft as well as to break the circuit between the power supply in order to start and stop the toy.

Abstract: A steering mechanism for self-powered vehicles and vehicles employing this mechanism are disclosed. The steering mechanism is characterized by a yoke pivotably attached to the vehicle frame which carries one of the vehicle's axles. A crown gear is provided on the axle which engages a spur gear mounted on the yoke in a position substantially perpendicular to the crown gear. The spur gear is connected through a drive train to a reversible motor. Stops are provided on the frame or yoke which hold the axle substantially parallel to the vehicle's other axle when the motor is turning in a given direction. Then the axle is positioned so that the vehicle will travel in a straight line. When the motor is reversed the stops will allow the yoke and attached axle to pivot to a postion where the axles are no longer parallel and the vehicle will turn.

  • Patent number: 4488375
Abstract: A toy motor car comprises a body having a bottom cover secured thereto by means of screws and a frame on which the body is pivotally mounted. Back wheels of the car are rotatably mounted to the frame and are adapted to be driven in rotation by a battery powered motor housed in a gear box mounted on the frame. The motor also effects rotation of a pinion and an eccentric cam. A clutch is provided in the gear box for changing the direction of rotation of the back wheels at predetermined intervals and, when the car is travelling in a first direction, the cam engages a cam follower which is pivotal with respect to the frame to effect rocking of the body relative to the frame. When the direction of rotation of the back wheels changes, the cam is disengaged from the cam follower and the pinion engages a rack of a lever thereby turning front wheels of the car.

A gasoline engine provides power to the drive wheels. Control levers are provided, one for each drive wheel, to simultaneously brake and disengage the drive power to one drive wheel. Two kinds of rotating vehicle motion is achieved. Rotation about a braked disengaged wheel occurs where the other wheel is not braked and fully engaged. Rotation about the vertical center-line of the vehicle occurs when one wheel is first braked, its power disengaged, and then its brake is released but its power remains disengaged where the other wheel is not braked and is fully engaged.

Abstract: A toy vehicle which when propelled by a player from a starting point along a flat surface in the forward direction, acts to store energy, the vehicle at the end of its forward run being caused by the stored energy to reverse its orientation as it runs back toward the starting point. The vehicle includes a chassis having a front cowl section projecting therefrom below which is a front wheel carriage coupled to the cowl by a pivot pin, whereby the carriage orientation is reversible relative to the cowl. The carriage has a spring motor therein operatively coupled to the front wheel axle which when rotated during the forward run of the vehicle acts to wind the motor. The rear wheel axle is supported in bearings below the rear section of the chassis, one of which is slotted to permit angular displacement of the axle.
