  • Patent number: 5259808
Abstract: A flip-over toy vehicle including a body and a pivot mechanism having a first end and a second end. The first end of the pivot mechanism is pivotally mounted to the body. The pivot mechanism is movable between a drive position wherein the second end of the pivot mechanism is positioned proximate the body and a pivoted position wherein the second end of the pivot mechanism is spaced from the body. A first wheel is rotatably mounted to the first end of the pivot mechanism. A second wheel is rotatably mounted to the second end of the pivot mechanism. A bias member is mounted to bias the second end of the pivot mechanism toward the pivoted position. A latch is movably mounted between a latched position wherein the latch retains the pivot mechanism in the drive position and an unlatched position wherein the pivot mechanism is released from the drive position to move to the pivoted position.

  • Patent number: 5228880
Abstract: A drive mechanism for a toy vehicle. The drive mechanism connects a drive shaft of the vehicle to a driven wheel having an axis of rotation. It includes a first arm affixed to the vehicle drive shaft for rotation therewith. A second arm is affixed to the wheel axle for rotation with the axle. The first and second arms are pivotally connected together at a position offset from the drive shaft and the wheel axis. A spring biases the arms into an overlapping relationship in which, during normal rolling movement of the vehicle, the drive shaft is aligned with the driven wheel so that the wheel rotates about the axis of the drive shaft. A first stop is provided to engage the arms to limit rotation of the arms about their pivotal connection relative to each other in the direction of rotation of the wheel axle. A second stop engages the arms to limit rotation of the arms away from each other towards a fully extended position.

  • Patent number: 5102367
Abstract: Toy vehicle wheels are each mounted on an axle having a gear with each of the wheels having a pair of diametrically opposed arcuate segments. Each of the arcuate segments includes an inwardly extending member with each member including a rack that is kept in engagement with an opposed toothed side of the gear. A coiled spring biases the two opposed arcuate segments toward each other. With a motor driving the axle in one direction, the wheel is initially rotated with the opposed arcuate segments in a first position proximate each other until the wheel encounters an impediment that stalls rotation of the wheel so that continued rotation of the axle in one direction drives the segments away from each other. For enhancing the visual effect of the arcuate segments being moved away from each other, edges of the arcuate segments are provided with projecting parts that are obscured when the arcuate segments are in the first position proximate each other.

  • Patent number: 5045016
Abstract: A toy wheeled vehicle such as a toy truck which is intended to be pushed along by a child includes electronic circuitry which is capable of emitting a plurality of different sounds similar to the sounds of a real truck. The actual sound of a truck's internal combustion engine is digitized and stored in a microprocessor along with other sounds such as those generated by a starter motor, horn, backup beeper and the like. In addition, the microprocessor is capable of synthesizing additional realistic vehicle sounds such as those generated by air brakes and the like. A starter switch first activates the starter motor sound and then the engine sound at idle speed. A speed sensor senses both speed and direction of travel and varies the engine sound in response to the sensed speed. The backup beeper sound is automatically generated along with the engine sound when the truck is moved in reverse. The microprocessor not only stores all of the digitized sounds but also controls all of the operations of the truck.

  • Patent number: 4828525
Abstract: Remote light controlled toy vehicle is provided with a transmitting source for infrared rays of predetermined frequency through a predetermined angle of radiation and a mobile toy operatively responsive to reception of the infrared rays. The mobile toy has at least first and second wheels and a motor; with there being a first gear train permanently connecting the motor and the first wheel and with there being a disengageable second motor gear train connecting the motor and the second wheel; the second motor train incorporating shiftable components so that upon rotation of the motor shaft in, one direction, motion transmission is inhibited. The vehicle contains first and second prima movers; the first being non-reactive to the infrared ray emissions so that the first gear train will operate with the other, or second, being inactive whereby the vehicle will tend to rotate about its vertical axis.

  • Patent number: 4773889
Abstract: A toy vehicle wheel that changes from a generally cylindrical periphery with an initial diameter and axial width to a greater diameter periphery. The wheel has a hollow shell of rubber or some other flexible material and opposed sidewalls of the wheel are moveable relative to each other to compress the axial width and increase the diameter. Across a substantial portion of the initial axial width a number of slits extend so that the periphery is serrated when it is enlarged. In one form, an axial screw engages a sidewall to rotate the wheel in its initial quiescent condition along a relatively unobstructed surface, but, upon encountering an obstruction, will draw the one sidewall toward the other. Variations provide for containing the axial screw within the compressed wheel or permitting it to extend out of a sidewall. Other forms provide for movement of the sidewalls relative to each other with bayonet locking in a desired condition and for spring bias in one direction.

  • Patent number: 4772242
Abstract: A wheeled toy vehicle is disclosed having a frame and a drive wheel rotatably mounted on the frame, to roll across a support surface. A pair of forearms are pivoted to the frame, respectively on its opposite sides. Each forearm has a fist at its forward end and an elbow at its rearward end. Each forearm is constrained to pivot between a raised position having its fist well above the elbow and the support surface, and a lowered position having its fist close to the support surface. A drive couples each forearm, at a location between the elbow and fist, to the drive wheel, for repeatedly raising and lowering each forearm, as the drive wheel is rotated. A pair of upper arms respectively are pivoted to the forearms at the elbows. The upper arm is angled relative to its associated forearm, the angle between each upper arm and forearm being its minimum near the raised position and being its maximum near the lowered position.

  • Patent number: 4648853
Abstract: A wheel assembly for toy vehicles that includes a spider mounted for rotation inside of a generally cylindrical hollow wheel. The spider carries lugs for extension and retraction through passages in the peripheral wall of the wheel. Also carried by the wheel for rotation relative to the wheel, and for rotational engagement with the spider, is a hub manually rotatable from outside of the wheel. The spider is biased for rotation in direction by one spring and the spider and hub are biased apart in an axial direction by another spring. Another spring biases the hub which has a flange with a number of notches against a sidewall of the wheel having a detent that fits into the notches to latch the hub into a lugs locked out, lugs locked in or neutral position.

  • Patent number: 4601519
Abstract: The present invention wheels have extendable traction spikes (spike pins) which are contained within the wheels and are automatically extended to enhance wheel traction. The automatic extension of the spike pins occurs, in one embodiment, upon achievement of a predetermined torque. In another embodiment, when a predetermined movement, i.e. forward motion of the vehicle, occurs, the spike pins are automatically extended. The invention also includes vehicular toys including such wheels.
