  • Publication number: 20020094768
Abstract: A manual knife sharpener is provided with angle control structure. The structure includes a guide member having a guide surface which forms an angle with the abrasive surface of the sharpening member. When the blade is inserted into the space between the abrasive surface and the guide surface the blade presses against the guide surface to displace the guide surface linearly in a direction perpendicular to the guide surface so that the movement is a lateral movement in the same plane without any pivoting or twisting of the guide member. Thus, the angle between the guide surface and the abrasive surface remains constant regardless of the extent of displacement of the guide member.

  • Patent number: 6398633
Abstract: A hand held sharpener comprises a housing that has three sharpening stones having part cylindrical outer surfaces. A center stone is supported on the housing, and second and third stones are positioned on opposite sides of the center stone with axes of the peripheral surfaces of all the stones generally parallel. The stones axes lie on a plane but the spacing of the axes of a left stone is slightly different from the spacing between the axes of the center stone and the right stone, to form two different sharpening angles where the surfaces of the stones overlap. The configuration permits having a two stage sharpener with three stones that are held in a convenient housing for mounting and use. Both sides of a knife edge are sharpened simultaneously as the knife is drawn across the stones at the overlap region.

  • Patent number: 6257967
Abstract: A sharpening tool for a veneer knife has a primary stone and a secondary stone driven by a power head. The secondary stone is inclined at an angle to the primary stone corresponding to the angle of the defined faces of the veneer knife cutting edge. Outrigger supports are provided as gauge and guide members for the sharpening tool. The primary stone engages one face of the cutting edge and the secondary stone engages the other face of the cutting edge. The secondary stone is forcibly engaged with the primary stone and is rotatably driven by the primary stone.

  • Patent number: 6241595
Abstract: This invention is a sharpening device for lawn edger blades. The device is specifically designed for attachment to the machine and in use for when the machine is in operation. The reason for this is to keep the cutting edge of the blade continually sharp. The attachment is positioned near the cutting edge and sharpens the blade as it rotates. A manual switch or lever activates the sharpener as the user desires. The sharpener includes a caliper with an abrasive surface to squeeze against the rotating blade while the edger is in operation.

  • Patent number: 6206761
Abstract: A device for grinding the bedknife 6 of a lawnmower comprising a mounting bar 4, electromagnets 2 which are mounted flush with the top face of mounting bar, and end brackets 8. In use, the bedknife is placed on mounting bar and is held in place by electromagnets while end brackets are positioned relative to the bedknife and the bedknife secured to them. When a grindstone motor (not shown) is started, the electromagnets are automatically de-energized. After grinding, the grindstone motor is stopped and electromagnets are re-energized to hold a bedknife in place while the end brackets are detached. The electromagnets are then manually de-energized so that the bedknife can be removed from the device.

  • Patent number: 6071181
Abstract: A knife sharpening machine has sharpening and honing assemblies each having fixed and movable subassemblies with circular stones mounted on shafts, the stones being spaced from one another. An adjusting mechanism moves the movable subassemblies toward and away from the fixed subassemblies, from a position at which the stones interleave to one at which they are substantially tangent to one another. The movable subassemblies each includes a yoke in a free end of which the stone-carrying shaft is journaled for rotation. The yoke is pivoted on an axis of rotation. One gear is mounted on the axis of rotation of the yoke co-axially with the axis, driving a gear on the shaft of the subassembly carried by the yoke. A motor and gears of gear trains intermediate a pinion on the motor and the pivot gear are mounted on a plate mounted on a cast base/housing supporting the yoke.

  • Patent number: 5660582
Abstract: This invention is a tool designed to sharpen rotary cutter blades. In a first embodiment, an inside-threaded clamp is screwed down upon the blade, pressing it tightly against a platform from which a threaded shank rises, and holding the blade from turning. When an upper casing containing an inside angled abrasive strip is lowered over the clamp until contact is made against the blade surface, the abrasive strip is brought into contact with the blade edge. When the upper casing is rotated around the tightened clamp, the abrasive acts upon the blade edge and thereby sharpens the edge. A second embodiment is comprised of a blade holder for holding the cutting blade stationary and a ring member with an abrasive strip which fits around the blade holder such that the abrasive strip contacts the edge of the cutting blade.

  • Patent number: 5647250
Abstract: Embodiments of a tool guide are shown and described, each guide being for placement on a ski or other surface having an edge to be sharpened. The guide abuts against and travels along the ski edge that is being beveled by the tool, so that the file contacts the edge at a constant angle along the entire length of the ski, regardless of variations in ski width. The guide has an elevation member which holds one end of the tool at an elevated position, generally in the center region of the ski base, and allows the other end of the tool to rest on the ski edge. The guide includes one or more feet which abut against the side of the ski and a spacing member to connect the elevation member to the feet, so that the elevation member is kept at constant distance from the ski edge as the guide and tool are moved along the length of the ski. Little of the guide, except for the elevation member and the feet contact the ski, resulting in a self-cleaning design.

  • Patent number: 5499943
Abstract: This invention is a tool designed to sharpen rotary cutter blades used for cutting fabrics. In the preferred embodiment, when a dulled blade is placed over a threaded shank, an inside-threaded clamp is screwed down upon the blade, pressing it tightly against a platform from which the shank rises, and holding the blade from turning. Removing the upper casing and clamp, the blade is then turned over, replaced on the platform and the process repeated, thereby sharpening both sides of the blade edge.

  • Patent number: 5397262
Abstract: An improved knife grinder is desinged to have a motor transmission axle which transmits one or two units of wheel axle with its angles which are facing one another and entend slightly upward and outward. A base is fixed onto the vertical bottom surface which extends from the wheel shaft in coordination with the bearing positioning wheel axle, onto the upper end of which an axle bush can be housed. One or two units of glaze wheel is fitted onto the outer edge of the axle bush. While a stripe column is housed onto the position which is corresponding to the axle bush at its interior. Extending outward from the glaze wheel, three layers made of such materials as plastic, foam and grinding cloth are formed. A stair face is set on the upper end of the plastic layer, into which a positioning cover can be housed, and its mutli-angled protrusive column will be housed into the axle bush positioning hole; while the multi-angled groove at the other end will allow the wheel axle to be tightly screwed by a scew nut.

  • Patent number: 5371977
Abstract: A blade sharpening device (8) easily connectable to a source of rotating power, such as a battery powered hand drill (66), and having a guard member (14), a selectably locatable handle member (16/16') attached to the guard member, and hand-manipulatable means for maintaining the grinding surfaces of the sharpening device at a desired grinding angle and moving it along the length of the blade edge. The guard extends completely over the width of the rotatable sharpening members (10 & 58) and over about eighty (80.degree.) degrees or approximately a quadrant (ninety degrees) of their sides and provides an upper, curved surface (18) or a side, flat surface (19), depending on which handle location (30/28) is used, against which the user's hand can be rested for greater control and stability of the sharpener when in use on, for example, a lawn mower blade (62) which is still attached to the lawn mower drive shaft (63) at the underside of the lawn mower housing (64).
