Patent number: 5779528Abstract: An elastomeric mount or band is provided for circumferential placement about a bonded abrasive segment of the type generally used to form a segmented grinding wheel assembly of a rotary surface grinder. The band serves to cushion the segment relative to a chuck of the grinder. The band is provided with a predetermined original or untensioned circumference and is elastically deformable or stretchable to a larger circumference within a predetermined range of circumferences. This ability to elastically deform facilitates installation onto the segment and enables a single band to be used in combination with segments of various size. The band is preferably installed over a segment having a circumference greater than the band's original circumference so that tension in the installed band serves to mechanically fasten the band in position thereon. This mechanical fastening enables a user to easily move the band to various locations on the segment as desired.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1996Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: Norton CompanyInventor: John J. Patent number: 5662515Abstract: A profiled, soft cushioned roller is provided with an outer profiled abrading surface that conforms to and rides on a contoured substrate surface during an abrading operation. A soft roller usually in the form of a soft foam layer or body allows the profiled abrading surface to extend to and laterally wrap itself along the contoured substrate surface when pushed against the latter with the force needed to abrade the contoured surface. Because the outer surface portion of the profiled, soft roller is able to distort and wrap across the contoured surface, the soft profiled portion need not have the exact contoured shape and dimensions of the contoured surface being abraded. The soft roller body may have portions with different hardness by using different materials or different densities of the same foam material.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1996Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Inventor: Kenneth Evensen
