Patent number: 7056195Abstract: A sharpening device for the blade of a tool such as a chisel or plane is in two parts. The first is a jig into which the blade is inserted with its tapered end projecting some distance beyond the jig. This distance is related to the angle to which the blade is to be sharpened. The second part is a marked reference member which is brought into a position alongside the jig. The blade is advanced through the jig until its tip reaches a marking on the reference member corresponding to the required sharpening angle for the tool. The tool is then clamped in the jig. The jig incorporates a roller which rolls on the sharpening stone while the tapered tip of the blade is sharpened by contact with the stone.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2004Date of Patent: June 6, 2006Inventor: Geoffrey John Hamilton Evans

Patent number: 7052385Abstract: A device for use in the manual sharpening of arrow broadheads, razor blades and the like includes a unique symmetrical clamp and axle assembly having interchangeable, matched pairs of special purpose jaw members for gripping blades of differing configurations. When coupled to the frame, the clamp and axle assembly is freely rotatable, and this free rotation automatically aligns the length of the edge of the blade with the surface of a whetstone. Additionally these rotational and self-aligning capability enable the user to service both sides of the blade's edge with a single blade clamping operation, by manually rotating the clamp 180 degrees between passes along the surface of the whetstone.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2003Date of Patent: May 30, 2006Inventor: Ronald Swartz

Publication number: 20040097179Abstract: An apparatus for sharpening a blade having a base member with a slot for receiving and guiding a blade to be sharpened, first and second apertures disposed on either side of the slot, first and second resilient biasing members disposed in association with each of the first and second apertures such that each of the biasing members is substantially entirely enclosed within rear spring caps and protected from debris and contaminants. Sharpening members are connected to the biasing members and are rotatable about a central axis of each respective aperture between a first and second position, which rotation is limited by a stop member as the blade passes from one end of the slot toward the other. The durability of the base is enhanced with top guide rails so a blade entering the slot cannot cut into the base member.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 14, 2002Publication date: May 20, 2004Inventor: Ivo Cozzini

Patent number: 6383056Abstract: A plane constructed shaft system used to replace the cylindrical shaft in precision polishing apparatuses. Thus, the accuracy, productivity and cost of polishing apparatuses are improved. The shaft system has a four-surface hollow prism bushing and a four-surface prism shaft that can slide freely within the bushing. The polishing pressure is maintained by the weights of the shaft plus the parts attached to the shaft, but this pressure can be reduced by adjusting a load adjusting nut which compresses a loading spring acting on a collar stop attached to the shaft. The actual polishing pressure can be calculated according to the position of the load adjusting nut. Furthermore, the stock removal amount can be controlled by a stock removal stop ring which is mounted on the collar stop and can be adjusted up and down as required.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2000Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Inventor: Yin Ming Wang

Patent number: 6254455Abstract: A jig (10) for use in sharpening a cutting implement used in wood turning including a tubular body or housing (12) being mountable nearby a grinder. A tool holder (11) is located by and guided within the housing (12) so as to be pivotable about a longitudinal axis of the housing and slidable along that axis. Part of the tool passes through the housing (12) and holder (11), being attached to holder (11) so as to present a tip of the tool toward the grinder. The tool holder (11) further has a guide boss (14) engageable with a guide surface (13) on the housing such that throughout engagement a correlation exists between linear movement of the tool along the longitudinal axis and pivotal movement of the tool about the longitudinal axis, so as to enable a desired, controlled interaction between the tip of the tool and the grinder.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Inventors: Michael Irvine, John Arthur Crawford

Patent number: 5575711Abstract: This device is a low cost and an easy to use fixture for sharpening wood jointer and thickness planer blades or knives with extreme accuracy and sharpness. The device holds two blades at opposing angles creating a flat plane upon which a flat sharpening stone or abrasive device can employ repeated reciprocal movements. The holder is made of a rigid material with a bolt down clamp, which secures the two individual blades at the proper and precise angle. The design also employs individual adjustment screws, which elevates each end of both blades, allowing the user to sharpen blades of various widths. Once the rough sharpening is complete the device is then staged for the final honing of the blades. This feature makes it possible to sharpen the blades razor sharp as well as grind a secondary bevel on the blade.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1996Date of Patent: November 19, 1996Inventor: Dale E.
