Patent number: 5921847Abstract: A swing grinding fixture and process for using the same is disclosed that enables a conventional surface grinder to remanufacture a machine tool cutting insert by grinding a predetermined shape into the insert. A quick clamping insert holder coupled to a slide secures the tool insert in the fixture. A precision spindle cartridge is mounted in a rigid fixture body and coupled to the slide to provide the swing motion required to generate the radius to be ground. The rigid fixture body includes a pair of micrometer adjustable stops which limit the arc through which the slide may be swung and control the flank shape ground into the insert. In an alternative embodiment, a sine plate is attached to the fixture body and is used to incline the fixture to a predetermined insert rake angle. In operation, the grinding fixture is securely mounted to the table of a surface grinder and a cutting tool insert is secured in the insert holder.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1997Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Inventor: Robert P. Patent number: 5897428Abstract: A device and method for contouring and sharpening an ice skate blade. The device uses a fixture for holding the ice skate. The fixture employs retractable depending cam rollers to be guided by cam templates recessed into the top surface of the table of the machine. The cam templates are coverable when not in use, thus increasing the usefulness of the top surface of the table. The grinding wheel is movable into and away from the fixture. One of the cam rollers is mounted to an eccentric wheel for pitching the ice skate blade in relation to the grinding wheel. The method comprises the steps of clamping a skate into the fixture, retractably depending or lowering the cam rollers to engage the cam templates in the table of the machine, adjusting the cam roller by operating the eccentric to achieve the desired pitch, moving the grinding wheel to the fixture holding the ice skate and contouring or sharpening the ice skate.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1997Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Inventor: Glenn Sakcriska

Patent number: 5830048Abstract: A tool and method for holding an integrated circuit (IC) sample so that only a cross-section of the processed layers of the sample is polished and exposed. The tool includes (a) a mounting block with a recess, (b) a pivoting member pivotably attached in the recess so as to be pivotable between a first position at which an edge of the sample can be ground at a first angle of approximately 25.degree. and a second position at which the sample can be polished at a second angle of approximately 0.degree. to expose the cross-section of the processed layer without polishing the more resistant substrate, (c) a sample holder removably attached to the pivoting member with a face inclined at the first angle for attachment of the sample, and (d) a level corrector for adjusting a side-to-side tilt of the mounting block.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1997Date of Patent: November 3, 1998Assignee: Harris CorporationInventor: Ray R. Patent number: 5816898Abstract: A cutter sharpening accessory or cutter holder for use in conjunction with a drill press, radial arm saw or like woodworking apparatus to which a grinding tool, such as a diamond cup wheel, can be secured and rotated at high speed and having a work surface disposed thereunder on which the holder of the invention can be displaced relative to the grinding tool. The cutter sharpening accessory provided in accordance with the invention is adapted to rough and micro adjustment both radially and radial transversely to properly position a cutter to be sharpened relative to the horizontally disposed grinding face of the grinding tool. Continuous adjustment vertically is advantageous provided, furthermore, to ensure that the surface to be ground is properly located vertically relative to the grinding tool.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1997Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: Woodworker's SupplyInventors: John Wirth, Jr., Jay L. Sanger, Mark K. McCool

Patent number: 5775180Abstract: A sharpening device (2) for sharpening the teeth (131) of a rotary blade (130) is described in which the device (2) comprises a substantially planar base (4) to which is pivotally attached a back plate (10) containing a number of components or subassemblies. One subassembly is for retaining rotary blades (130) in such a manner as to allow rotation of the blades (130) so that each tooth (131) of the blade (130) can be sharpened in turn. Another subassembly attached to back plate (10) is a guiding subassembly which is selectively angularly inclinable to the base (4) for being accurately located relative to a rotary blade (130) so that movement of a round file (75) linearly between rollers (74) attached to roller block (60) which in turn is angularly inclined to adjustment plate (34) effects sharpening of teeth (131).Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1996Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Inventor: Terrence J. Parke

Patent number: 5664993Abstract: A spin index fixture has a housing which is provided with an air inlet shaft for permitting pressurized air to enter the housing and to propagate through grooves disposed along the outer surface of the sleeve. The air then enters into a clearance volume between the housing and the spindle and serves as an air bearing. The spindle is further provided with impelling recesses disposed circumferentially along the outside surface of the spindle at an axial location that is in alignment with the pressurized air inlets. The force of the air against the recesses rotates the spindle about its axis when the pressurized air supply contacts the recesses.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: TMX Engineering & ManufacturingInventor: Miklos M. Patent number: 5643065Abstract: An indexing and rotational feed control apparatus for a rotationally mounted spindle holding a work piece includes an indexing housing connected to the spindle and carrying an indexing finger is rotatably mounted relative to an indexing plate such that rotation of the indexing wheel provides sequential releasably fixed rotation of the spindle between angularly indexed positions. The indexing plate is connected to a shaft which in turn is connected to a rotary actuator such that rotation of the actuator permits precise rotation of the indexing wheel and indexing housing in either direction without disturbing the releasably fixed indexed position between the spindle and indexing wheel as set by the releasably fixed engagement between the indexing finger and the indexing wheel.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1996Date of Patent: July 1, 1997Inventor: Lowell E. Whitesel

Patent number: 5549506Abstract: Apparatus for supporting and containing a dental prosthesis during the micro-etching thereof is disclosed. The apparatus includes a framework, a holding mechanism carried by the framework for holding the prosthesis in a position which permits micro-etching, and a flexible hood, for example, a disposable plastic bag, which has an open end sized to slidably receive the framework into the hood while holding the prosthesis. The open end is sealable while the framework is so received, and the hood is transparent to permit viewing of the prosthesis within the hood. The hood is sliceable with a knife edge to provide a small slit which permits the tip of a micro-etching tool to extend into the hood. Alternately, the hood may be pre-slit for the same purpose.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1995Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Inventors: Jack Higa, Lawrence R. Higa
