  • Patent number: 6881498
Abstract: A surface processing method and power transmission component includes refining a surface region of a metal from a first roughness to a second roughness less than the first roughness. A solid lubricous coating or a hard coating is then deposited on the surface region. The metal has a surface hardness above 50 Rc to reduce the risk that the metal will deform under the coating and leave the coating unsupported. The surface region of the metal may be transformed into a nitrogen-containing compound or solid solution surface region before the surface refining step and deposition of the coating.

  • Patent number: 6783439
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a mirror surface tube for a photosensitive drum of a copying machine or the like, by which an external surface of an aluminium or aluminium alloy tube can be mirror-processed with high accuracy without surface defects, and in such a way that good quality required for a photosensitive drum is ensured and dimension accuracy, such as roundness, and production yield is improved involves a first step in which an aluminium or aluminium alloy tube, finished in a predetermined shape and dimension with surface roughness of 10 microns or less, is processed by a centerless grinding process. Then, in a second step, a grinding process is performed using an electrolytic integrated polishing apparatus including a tool electrode mechanism having an elastic grindstone so as to make a mirror surface tube having the surface roughness of 2.0 microns or less. Further, preferably, in a third stage, a roller burnishing process is performed to finish the tube to a surface roughness of 0.5 microns or less.

  • Patent number: 6495272
Abstract: A method of producing high quality optical surfaces is disclosed. The invention allows for the production of optical surfaces with complex geometry while retaining the high quality of the optical surface. A top layer is provided on a substrate. In order to adhere the top layer to the substrate, an adhesion layer is applied first. In the preferred embodiment, the substrate is an aluminum substrate, the adhesion layer includes a layer of zinc and a layer of nickel and the top layer is gold. The substrate is generally stress free in order to provide a flat surface with no undulations. This allows a relatively thin layer of gold to be applied which then can be diamond turned in order to achieve a reflective layer.

  • Patent number: 6358123
Abstract: A honing head for microburnishing surface of a recording/reproducing disc to a smoothness at which asperities are limited to submicron heights including a hardened contact bearing surface having an array of depressions with abrupt trailing edges interconnected by recessed channels leading outwardly from the honing head. The array of channels span a band in which an asperity may be present, and the sharp edges shear off the asperities within the band which extend above the chosen submicroinch height, with the separated particulates being passed through the recesses and channel system to the outer edge of the honing head. The trailing edges act to shear off the unwanted heights of the asperities, while the recesses enable pressure differentials and air flows to direct the separated particulates outwardly relative to the disc, centripetal forces of rotation bearing the particulates from the disc.

  • Patent number: 5782680
Abstract: A burnishing head, which is used to polish the surface of carriers that hold magnetic media (e.g., disks for computer hard drives), includes a slider that is mounted on a suspension. The slider includes at least four protrusions that protrude toward the surface to be polished. The protrusions are arranged symmetrically relative to the center of the slider. The sum of the surface areas of the protrusions is no more than approximately 20% of the total surface area of the slider that faces the surface to be polished. Preferably the sum of the surface areas of the protrusions is no more than 10%, even more preferably, no more than 7%, of the total surface area of the slider that faces the surface to be polished.
