Abstract: Disclosed is a method for static power allocation to source and relay stations in a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relay multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) network including of a source station (SS), a relay station (RS), and a destination station (DS) each transmitting signals using multiple antennas. The method performs power allocation to the SS and the RS according to the path loss, or equivalently, according to a distances, between the SS and the RS and the RS and DS. The transmit power of each transmit antenna at the SS and the power amplifying gain of the RS are determined from the power allocation outputs.

Abstract: A real-time program transmission system and method may receive a signal from a content source, and generate two different data streams. One stream may be of a higher quality than the other. The two streams may then be inserted into time slice frames, such that a single frame carries two portions of data: one corresponding to a first time segment in the program, and a second corresponding to a different time segment in the program. A receiving mobile terminal may buffer the received data, and may use the lower quality data as a backup in the event of a transmission error in the higher quality data.

  • Patent number: 7580673
Abstract: In a satellite or other relayed communication system having a plurality of subscriber terminals that communicate through an elevated wireless relay (typically a satellite operating in bent pipe mode), a technique for subscriber terminal power control is provided whereby the power level is controlled via leader-follower operation relying on sharing control factors determined at a single calibrated subscriber terminal transmitter (the leader terminal) to create traffic to be compared to the received traffic of the other subscriber terminals. The power level of the subscriber terminals is then adjusted based on the relationship of their received energy to the received energy of the leader terminal.

  • Patent number: 7558528
Abstract: A translating bi-directional packet repeater includes a first antenna and a second antenna for receiving a wireless signal, amplifying it, and retransmitting it on a different channel. The channel associated with each of the antennas is separated in frequency sufficiently to ensure good isolation between the wireless signals that are received and then retransmitted. The wireless signal is down converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) that is passed through a band pass filter, and the filtered signal is then up converted and retransmitted on the different channel. A controller responds to a wireless signal on one of the antennas in selecting a path through the bi-directional amplifier and the antennas used to receive and retransmit the signal. The isolation between the received wireless signal and the retransmitted wireless signal is sufficient to avoid interference, and the retransmission takes place almost instantaneously to minimize the delay incurred.

  • Patent number: 7409186
Abstract: A system and method for substantially reducing oscillation produced by a network amplifier. An exemplary method includes receiving a cellular signal at a first antenna of a network amplifier and applying a first amplification factor to the cellular signal. The resultant amplified cellular signal is transmitted to a target destination via a second antenna. A first signal level of the cellular signal is measured while the first amplification factor is being applied to the cellular signal. Then, a second amplification factor that is less than the first amplification factor is applied to the cellular signal, during which a second signal level of the cellular signal is measured. If the second signal level is significantly less than the first signal level, the first amplification factor is reduced by a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 7406295
Abstract: A method for dynamically directing a wireless repeater is provided. A repeater will include an antenna, a mobile station modem, a processor and data storage. The processor will cause the antenna to sweep over a coverage area, possibly through increments. At each increment, the antenna will receive signals and pass the signals to the MSM. The MSM will then apply a rake receiver to identify characteristics in the received signals, such as PN offsets and signal-to-noise ratios (EC/IO) for each PN offset, and the processor will record in the data storage the PN offsets and corresponding signal-to-noise ratios at that increment. Given this data, the processor will then instruct the antenna to move to the increment where the MSM detected the strongest signal-to-noise ratio. As a result, the antenna of the repeater will point at a base station that is likely to supply the signal with the highest signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract: Communications sourced by a remote unit (14) that is already within reception range of a base site (10) can nevertheless be further facilitated through allocation of one or more relay resources (15, 16). Such relay resources, properly employed, then serve to effectively increase the quality of service for the facilitated communication. This, in turn, can permit the use of, for example, increased data rates for communications from a relatively low power remote unit.

  • Patent number: 7386310
Abstract: A satellite communications system having a fallback mode of operation, during which uplink signals are transmitted at a reduced data rate, is provided with a novel fallback mode ingress/egress mechanism utilizing a combination of a feedback-based fade detection scheme and fade detection based on parameters independent of the uplink signal transmission. The fallback mode ingress/egress mechanism is responsive to a satellite beacon signal independent of the uplink signals and to feedback signals produced by the satellite in response to the uplink signals, for requesting a satellite terminal to switch into the fallback mode when either the feedback signals indicate an increase in a fade level or in response to a first value of a selected parameter of the satellite beacon signal. The fallback mode ingress/egress mechanism requests the satellite terminal to switch out of the fallback mode in response to a second value of the satellite beacon signal parameter.
