  • Patent number: 7395038
Abstract: The present invention, generally speaking, provides for high-efficiency power control of a high-efficiency (e.g., hard-limiting or switch-mode) power amplifier in such a manner as to achieve a desired modulation. In one embodiment, the spread between a maximum frequency of the desired modulation and the operating frequency of a switch-mode DC-DC converter is reduced by following the switch-mode converter with an active linear regulator. The linear regulator is designed so as to control the operating voltage of the power amplifier with sufficient bandwidth to faithfully reproduce the desired amplitude modulation wave-form. The linear regulator is further designed to reject variations on its input voltage even while the output voltage is changed in response to an applied control signal. This rejection will occur even though the variations on the input voltage are of commensurate or even lower frequency than that of the controlled output variation.

  • Patent number: 7369598
Abstract: A waveform-adaptive ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter and noise-tracking UWB receiver for use in communications, object detection and radar applications. In one embodiment, the output of an oscillator is gated by a low-level impulse generator either directly or through an optional filter. In a special case of that embodiment wherein the oscillator is zero frequency and outputs a DC bias, a low-level impulse generator impulse-excites a bandpass filter to produce an UWB signal having an adjustable center frequency and desired bandwidth based on a characteristic of the filter. In another embodiment, the low-level impulse signal is approximated by a time-gated continuous-wave oscillator to produce an extremely wide bandwidth pulse with deterministic center frequency and bandwidth characteristics. The low-level impulse signal can be generated digitally. The UWB signal may be modulated to carry data, or may be used in object detection or ranging applications.

  • Patent number: 7346318
Abstract: In radio communication system that is able to transmit in two or more modulation modes, e.g., one modulation mode when phase shifts are performed and another modulation mode when phase shifts and amplitude shifts are performed, the disclosed invention can avoid that receiving band noise becomes so great not to conform to the GSM standards' prescription for such noise in a high voltage region of the power supply voltage, even when the output power is controlled by changing the amplitude of the input signal to the power amplifier circuitry while fixing the bias voltages to be applied to the power amplifying transistors. When the output power is controlled as above, in the modulation mode (GSM mode) when phase shifts are performed, idle currents flowing across the power amplifying transistors are regulated, depending on the power supply voltage, i.e., the idle currents are decreased when the power supply voltage is high and increased when the power supply voltage is low.
