Patent number: 5675065Abstract: This invention is a synthetic hybrid corn plant having the designation LP39, produced by crossing two proprietary Pfister Hybrid Corn Company maize synthetics, LP39A-Reid and LP39B-Lancaster. LP39 has the unique property of imparting high oil and high protein levels in the grain of certain normal and male sterile hybrids when used as a pollinator; and in addition is characterized by excellent cold tolerant seedling vigor for rapid emergence in cold soils, and excellent early-season adaptability to nick with early maize hybrids that condition fast dry-down and superior grain quality in the recipient female grain parent. This invention thus relates to the synthetic hybrid plants and seeds of LP39, i.e., the synthetic hybrid produced by crossing the two aforementioned synthetics and the seed thereof, including advanced generation seed, variants, mutants, and modifications of LP39.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Inventor: Richard R. Patent number: 5659124Abstract: The present invention provides a dual method for producing male-sterile plants. Two genetically transformed plants, parents 1 and 2 are crossed to obtain male-sterile offspring. Parent 1 is transformed with an expression cassette comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding an anther-specific promoter which is operably linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding a transactivator. Parent 2 is transformed with an expression cassette comprising a target nucleotide sequence, which is capable of being activated by the transactivator, operably linked to a nucleotide sequence which encodes RNA or a polypeptide which will disrupt the formation of viable pollen. Therefore, crossing parent 1 with parent 2 results in male-sterile offspring. The male-sterile plants are useful for producing hybrid seed. The invention also provides compositions and methods for high level expression of a coding region of interest in a plant.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1995Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: Novartis CorporationInventors: Lyle D. Patent number: 5638637Abstract: Improved rape plants, seeds capable of forming the same, and a novel improved endogenous vegetable oil derived from the rapeseeds are provided. Such plants have the ability to yield an endogenous vegetable oil of increased heat stability in combination with other desirable traits. The increased stability of the vegetable oil is attributable to the presence of an unusually high oleic acid content in the rapeseeds which has been lacking in the available rape plants of the prior art. It has been found that the novel rape plants of the present invention reliably can be formed by mutagenesis followed by selection as described. The vegetable oil produced by the improved rape plants of the present invention is particularly well suited for use as a frying oil wherein the increased stability at elevated temperatures is of prime importance.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1988Date of Patent: June 17, 1997Assignee: Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.Inventors: Raymond S. Patent number: 5602313Abstract: A pink-flowered soybean plant which possesses large seeds and high protein seed content, without a concomitant decrease in yield. The pink-flowered soybean plant is easily distinguished from wild-type and domesticated cultivars by virtue of its unique flower color and appearance. The two commercially significant traits, large seed size and high protein seed content, cosegregate with the pink flower trait. Seed size and protein content of soybean cultivars are therefore efficiently and quickly increased by crossing with the pink-flowered plant, then selecting for pink-flowered progeny. Prior difficulties in tracking and monitoring increases in seed protein content are eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: February 11, 1997Assignee: Research Corporation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Cecil D.
