The apparatus (100) comprises a robotic arm (110) mounted to a substructure (112), the substructure comprising a lifting mechanism arranged to lift the robotic arm to a working position, wherein the robotic arm has a base end (110a) and a movable end (110b), the base end being mounted to an upper surface (114) of the lifting mechanism and the movable end being capable of movement with respect to the base end in a three dimensional space, wherein the robotic drilling apparatus further comprises a mount (120) provided on the movable end for holding a drilling device (122) and a control unit (134) for controlling the operation of the robotic arm. The lifting mechanism preferably comprises a scissor-jack lifting platform. The robotic arm (110) and any support structure (134) for the robotic arm weighs less than 43 kg, and preferably individually weigh less than 23 kg.

A die press actuated at a first speed receives the contoured wire into a die having a piercing element for piercing an aperture and a cutting element for cutting a fastener from the wire. A guide receives the fasteners from the die press and a drive unit engages the fasteners oriented by the guide and conveys the fastener to an elevated height relative to a tapping device. The guide redirects the fasteners by a first router. The fasteners are gravity fed into the first router and redirected to one of the tapping devices. Each tapping device has a tapping element for forming internal ribs in the aperture of the fastener. The tapping devices each actuates at a second speed that in aggregate is generally equal to the first speed of the die press.

Another tap is driven by a non-circular shaft extending from the threaded portion of the tap. The taps may be removed from the workpiece by passing through the threaded hole, thereby eliminating the need to unscrew the tap through the already tapped hole.

A motor is disposed in one of the handles and is connected with the chuck by a drive mechanism. Manual actuation of a motor control lever mounted on the one handle initiates operation of the motor. Upon operation of the motor, force is transmitted through a drive mechanism to the chuck to rotate the chuck and the tap. Upon interruption of operation of the motor, the tap may be rotated under the influence of force which is manually applied to the handles.

The tapping tool is rotated to a similar high speed and is synchronized with the rotating workpiece in both rotational velocity and position. Upon completion of the drilling operation, tapping is performed and subsequent drilling operations may be resumed promptly. Since synchronization has been achieved, the switching between drilling and tapping operations may be obtained with little loss time.

The spindle is rotated by a timing belt transmitting power from a driver timing pulley. The timing belt is fitted around the timing pulley and grooved spindle with a pair of 90.degree. twists in the loaded and unloaded sections between the two pulleys. As power is applied to the timing pulley, the belt migrates toward the end of the pulley and the spindle closest to the unloaded section of the belt; and when a resistant torque is applied to the spindle the timing belt migrates to a stable position with respect to both the timing pulley and the grooved spindle and transmits torque and an axial force to the spindle.
