Patent number: 7273428Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a tethered baseball in position for batting practice and automatically retrieving the ball after it has been hit with a bat, which includes an adjustable height stand, a fishing reel and a variable speed motor connected thereto. Tethered by a small gauge fishing line which is attached to the reel, the ball, prior to being hit, rests atop the adjustable strand. When the ball is hit, the line is released nearly effortlessly from the reel; and the ball is allowed to travel virtually unobstructed during its flight. When the ball has traveled its full distance, the batter, by pushing a switch with a foot pedal, starts the motor, causing the reel to rewind the line. A control on the switch allows the batter to vary the speed of the motor from fast when the ball is at a distance to slow when the ball approaches the batter.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2005Date of Patent: September 25, 2007Inventor: Barry D. The trainer can then explain in whatever detail is necessary for the trainee to understand the instructions being provided and the trainee can respond accordingly. The device improves training efficiency by allowing the trainer to retain possession and control of the ball. The ultimate results for the trainee are improved eye-hand coordination, many practice swings at an actual ball per unit time, immediate feed back on the result of each swing, and improved self-confidence as more and more contact is made by the bat with the ball, especially in young ball players.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2000Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Inventor: Joel Grubman

Patent number: 6402647Abstract: A kick-strengthening practice soccer ball is given a little extra weight but preferably softened also for enhance shock absorption when kicked. The practice ball has an inflatable bladder, a carcass of tough durable material, and an intermediary sheath of substantially non-stretchable, flexible material for restraining expansion of the bladder when inflated to pressure. Thus the sheath thereby reduces the outward pressure on the carcass while also increasing the dimensional stability of the ball. A shock-absorbing weighting material interposed between either the bladder and sheath or sheath and carcass. The weighting material accounts for between about 4% and 40% of the total weight of the practice ball when inflated to pressure. If a nominal average weight for a standard matchball is taken to be between 14 to 16 ounces, the weighting material adds an additional increment from anywhere between about 1 and 10 ounces.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Inventor: Arthur S. Publication number: 20020028716Abstract: A stand for a vertical pole support for a tether ball type game includes a base which can contain ballast and a lid, through which the pole passes and a formation on its floor for receiving the end of the pole. The lid and base are attached by a two stage attachment arrangement. The first stage includes inter-engageable tongue and groove formations which are capable of attachment and detachment by application of finger pressure, and the second stage includes locking devices at points around the periphery of the base container for a positive lock of the lid to the base, so that the first stage cannot be broken other than by the use of excessive force having regard to the conventional use of the stand.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2001Publication date: March 7, 2002Applicant: European Sports Merchandising BVInventor: Ian Gavin Gormley

Patent number: 6296582Abstract: A ball hitting practice device featuring a practice ball slidably located upon a tether. The tether is attached to a support structure thereby placing the practice ball in a target position to be hit by a user. The support structure may be mounted to a base, driven into the ground, or attached to a wall. The ball is slidably mounted to the tether and is positioned in a target position for striking by a user by a ball positioner also located on the tether in a fixed position that is either adjustable or permanent. Once struck during use, the practice ball and attached tether wrap around the support structure and may be aided in the return to the target position by an elongated biasing device attached to the distal end of the tether and the support structure or another fixed point of attachment. An optional cam may be used to adjust the radius of a vertical post of the support structure thereby allowing the user to alter the return speed of the ball to the target position by adjusting the cam.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1999Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Inventor: Timothy Minniear
