  • Publication number: 20090205206
Abstract: The assembly method includes packaging of items for shipment and secures components of the assembly in a fashion and in the related position required for further assembly, as a unit, to an engine that is in the process of being assembled. The timed assembly arrives at the engine plant secured together such that it allows handling, at least in part, as a single component and with its parts arranged in the relative position required for proper timing and for securing to other components of the engine. The chain (44) is pinned between a tensioner pin (66) and the tensioner chain contacting surface (60) and between a guide pin (74) and the guide or snubber chain contacting surface (88). The tensioner is preferably pinned in a state of minimum extension.

Abstract: In a tensioner for a timing chain, a spring-biased plunger for urging a shoe into sliding engagement with the chain is temporarily held in a retracted condition, prior to installation of the tensioner, by a stopper having a pin that extends through a hole in the tensioner housing and engages a grove formed in the plunger. The stopper is bent so that its handle extends away form the pin axis at an angle greater than zero but not greater than 90°. Removal of the stopper from the tensioner can be carried out by rotating the handle to avoid interference with engine components in the vicinity of the tensioner.

The chain links are hingedly interconnected to adjacent links by transversely-extending hinge pins. A least some of the links include outer guide plates having convexly-curved ends that are so configured that the ends of adjacent guide plates contact each other when the chain is at a predetermined limiting angle of deflection during a swing-back mode, which deflection direction is in a direction opposite to the direction of deflection of the chain as it passes around a toothed wheel. The limitation of chain deflection during a swing-back mode serves to limit the frequency and amplitude of strand oscillations and thereby reduces the noise that would otherwise result from strand oscillations.

Abstract: A blade-type tensioner for applying tension to a chain comprising a base, an arcuately shaped blade shoe having a chain sliding face, a spring provided on a back side of the blade shoe, and a guide member. The blade shoe has a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, where the proximal end portion is swingably supported on the base, and the distal end portion is slidably supported on a slide plate of the base. The slide plate is arcuately shaped to form a concavely arcuate arc face on an opposite side of the distal end portion of the blade shoe, and the distal end portion of the blade shoe has a convexly arcuate arc face corresponding to the concavely arcuate arc face of the slide plate. The distal end portion of the blade shoe is guided by a self-aligning action of the concavely arcuate arc face of the slide plate in such a way that the distal end portion is centrally positioned in a lateral direction on the slide plate.

Abstract: In a movable guide for transmission device in which a guide body is formed from a synthetic resin and comprises a chain-contacting shoe and a plate-receiving portion formed as a unit with the shoe on the back side thereof, the plate-receiving portion has plural, longitudinally extending slots, each receiving a reinforcing plate. The plural reinforcing plates improve the bending rigidity, toughness, strength and wear properties of the guide, prevent falling down of the guide and guide torsion, ensure stable travel of the chain, and prevent running of the chain off the guide in a widthwise direction. Improved compactness of the guide and of the overall mechanism, is made possible by the use of plural plates. The plates can be connected to one another by a tensioner-contacting portion, formed as a unit with the plates.

  • Patent number: 6852051
Abstract: A tensioner lever for a chain or belt power transmission comprises a resin shoe having a shoe surface on which the chain or belt slides, and a back surface with a plunger-engaging part adjacent one end and a lever shaft bearing adjacent the other end. A shape-retaining groove extends longitudinally along the shoe through the plunger engaging part and the lever shaft bearing. A part of a strength-maintaining plate is fits in the shape-retaining groove and a part of the strength-maintaining plate is exposed. Simplification and weight reduction in the tensioner lever can be realized, and molding accuracy requirements are reduced. Assembly is simplified by pawls formed in openings in a side wall of the shoe, which cooperate with locking holes in the strength-maintaining plate. The pawls simplify disassembly for recycling and may be notched so that they can be broken away.

  • Patent number: 6849015
Abstract: An engine chain or belt tensioning system includes a tensioner pivot arm with a ratcheting means that includes backlash in an engine timing system. The tensioner system includes a tensioner pivot arm having a fixed pin, ratchet teeth, and a connection for a rotation-causing device, all being spaced radially outward from a pivoting feature. The pivoting feature and the fixed pin are positioned between two strands of a chain. An arm carrying a shoe extended outside the strands of chain and positioned to contact an outside portion of chain is pivotally mounted to the fixed pin. Rotation of the pivot arm causes the arm and shoe to draw inwards, imparting tension to the chain strand. The ratchet teeth allow free rotation of the tensioner arm in one direction, but not the other.

  • Patent number: 6849014
Abstract: In a sliding contact guide for a chain, a guide body is composed of a shoe having a front surface on which the chain slides, and a plate-receiving portion provided on the back of the shoe. The shoe and plate-receiving portion are integrally molded from a synthetic resin. A reinforcing plate is inserted and fitted into a longitudinal slot in the plate-receiving and the sliding contact guide is attached to a frame by a pivot pin which extends through aligned mounting holes in the guide body and the reinforcing plate. Locking pieces formed in the plate-receiving portion, have tapered surfaces on their tips that engage locking holes in the plate and exert a biasing force on edges of the locking holes which urges the plate against the back of the shoe. The reinforcing plate and the guide body are reliably secured together and, even when the guide is vibrated, movement of the reinforcing plate in the slot of the guide body is prevented, so that low noise and long life are attained.

A mounting hole adjacent one end of the guide body is aligned with a hole adjacent one end of the reinforcing plate. The diameter of the hole in the reinforcing plate is larger than the diameter of the mounting hole in the guide body, so that the inner periphery of the hole in the reinforcing plate does not extend inward past the edge of the mounting hole. The guide so configured exhibits excellent quietness and assembly efficiency and can be produced at a relatively low cost.

Abstract: In a pivoting guide for a traveling transmission chain, composed of a synthetic resin body having a shoe and a slotted reinforcement, and a plate fitting into the slot, the plate has a mounting hole received on a boss formed on the guide body and coaxial with a mounting hole on the guide body which receives a pivot shaft. This structure facilitates assembly and mounting because the plate is securely attached to the guide body before the assembly is mounted. The plate does not contact the pivot shaft, and therefore full advantage is taken of the self-lubricating property of the synthetic resin. The boss may be elongated so that the length of the mounting hole of the guide body is greater than the width of the shoe so that wear in of the guide body due to biased loads is dispersed, and the useful life of the guide is extended.
