The climb assist belt can be driven by a motor to provide an upwards climb assistance force to a user along a vertical path. The motor can be dynamically adjusted to continuously provide a level of climb assistance. The integrated controller is also configured to mechanically detect downwards movement and engage an overspeed braking mechanism when a threshold velocity or acceleration is detected.

    Abstract: A belt transmission mechanism has a crowned drive pulley, a crowned driven pulley, and a belt trained under tension around the crowned drive pulley and the crowned driven pulley. The crowned drive pulley and the crowned driven pulley are dimensioned to satisfy the equation:D2/D1=k.multidot.R1/R2where D1 is the diameter of the crowned drive pulley, D2 is the diameter of the crowned driven pulley, R1 is the radius of the crown of the crowned drive pulley, R2 is the radius of the crown of the crowned driven pulley, and k is a constant which is approximately 1. The belt transmission mechanism with the above drive and driven pulley dimensions can maintain its speed reduction ratio highly accurately even when the tension of the belt varies.

    Abstract: A vertical lift aircraft comprising an aircraft body and a lifting assembly is presented. The lifting assembly comprises a frame wherein at least one airfoil assembly which includes a plurality of airfoils attached to a drive ring is secured. As the drive ring rotates, the airfoils move through the air and create lift. The pitch of the airfoils or blades can be fixed or variable. The drive ring is rotated by a band which is in frictional contact with the inner surface of the drive ring. The band is rotated by at least one pair of rollers which are in frictional contact with the band. Aircraft stability is controlled by regulating airfoil pitch which is responsive to pivoting of a control ring. Alternatively, aircraft stability is provided by regulating the flow of air or gas from a plurality of nozzles disposed about the aircraft. The body, a portion of which may be located inside the lifting assembly, includes a passenger and load carrying compartment and an engine assembly.

    Abstract: The combination of an endless power transmission belt construction and a pulley therefor, the belt construction and methods of making the same are provided, the belt construction having opposed inner and outer surfaces with one surface defining a plurality of longitudinally disposed and alternately spaced apart like projections and grooves that are adapted to mesh with a ribbed surface of one pulley, and a planar surface adapted to operate on a planar surface of another pulley, wherein the planar surface of the belt construction comprises a polymeric material. The polymeric material of the planar surface provides a greater tractive force on the planar surface of the pulley. The planar surface further provides means to prevent abrasive particles accumulating thereon, thereby reducing wear upon the planar surface of the pulley.

    Abstract: A flat belt transmission has two spaced flat pulleys and a flat belt reeved around the flat pulleys. Each pulley can have a plurality of crowns arranged in the width direction of the outer periphery thereof. The flat belt can be a plurality of belts with a narrow width, one for each of the crowns. The flat belt can be a single belt with a part extending in the longitudinal direction of the belt in its inner periphery. The flat belt can be used with the flat pulley of the above construction or a flat pulley having a single crown of its outer periphery. In addition, the plurality of crowns are formed on the outer periphery of the flat pulley so as to be spaced at the same distance from the center of rotation of the pulley, or the outer periphery of the flat pulley can be in the form of a circular arc to change height of the crowns.

    Abstract: A weight reduced pulley for "K" type poly-v belt systems includes a body having an outer cylindrical surface. A plurality of raised ribs extend from said surface and run circumferentially around said surface. A plurality of trough areas are positioned between the ribs. The ribs and troughs corresponding to the location of indented and raised areas, respectively, on a poly-v belt. The ribs have a cross sectional profile extending radially traverse of the axis of rotation of the pulley, each rib being bounded by a pair of planar side walls at relative angles of 40.degree.+0.5.degree.. The side walls terminate in a 140.degree. arc having a radius of 0.5 mm, the outermost point of said arc terminating 0.96 mm inward of the intersection of the upward projections of the planar side walls or apex. The planar side walls extend radially inward at least 3.44 mm from said apex. The trough areas are bounded by the outer cylindrical surface of said pulley, said surface being 3.57 mm from said apex.

The system has an endless flat drive belt extending past the whorls generally perpendicular to their axes and having a first belt surface radially directly confronting the whorl surface and of a predetermined axial belt width measured parallel to the axes and pusher rollers bearing radially inward against the belt and urging the belt surface toward the whorl surface. A ridge is formed on one of the surfaces, radially engages the other surface, holds the rest of the other surface out of contact with the one surface except at the ridge, and is of a predetermined ridge width in contact with the other surface and measured parallel to the axes equal to at most one-third of the belt width.

    Abstract: A continuously variable transmission for a vehicle (FIG. 1) has a drive pulley (4), a driven pulley (11), and a tension pulley (19) each having a pair of axially spaced rotors. The opposed inner faces of the rotors of each pulley are formed with slopes which have gradients with respect to the respective axis of rotation increasing continuously in proportion to the radii of the faces. A plurality of belts made up of thin bands (22a, 22b, 22c) run on the three pulleys (4, 11, 19) such that the respective band edges are in contact with the respective slopes of the three pulleys. The distances between the respective slopes of the drive and driven pulleys are variable, so that the rotating speed ratio between the drive and driven pulleys can be varied by varying the contacting radii of the belts with the drive and driven pulleys, while uniform tension is imparted to the belts by the tension pulley.

    Abstract: In a belt and pulley system wherein motion is transferred between the two members, the belt is a metal belt having a pulley engaging face made of a relatively soft material and the pulley is one having a regular pattern of small hard protuberances, such as formed by knurling, on its belt engaging face which press into the soft metal of the belt to form permanent depressions arranged in a matching pattern which mesh with the protuberances to provide a positive slip-free motion transfer. The belt and pulley drive may be used advantageously in a device such as an X-Y plotter for accurately positioning, with good repeatibility and fine resolution, an associated member driven in one coordinate direction by the metal belt driven in turn by the knurled pulley.

The grooves or the ridges or both are formed in a cross-section along a concave line so that a clearance is formed between the pulley and the belt when the tension is removed from the belt, the clearance being larger at a transversely central portion than at side edge portions.
