Abstract: The invention relates to a hydraulically controllable constant speed drive, comprising an input shaft (10) provided with an input pulley (1), an output shaft (20) provided with an output pulley (2) and a drive belt (3). Each pulley (1; 2) is provided with two pulley sheaves (11, 12; 21, 22) that are mutually axially displaceable under the influence of a hydraulic pressure to be exerted in a piston-cylinder assembly (14, 15; 24, 25) associated with the pulley (1, 2) and that define a tapered groove of variable axial width wherein the drive belt (3) is accommodated. An input spring (17) is provided that realises an axial force urging the pulley sheaves (11, 12) of the input pulley (1) towards each other to prevent slip of the drive belt (3) when the hydraulic pressure is negligible.

Therefore, as compared with a case where the cancel plate is separately provided, the number of components decreases, which reduces the weight and manufacturing cost. In addition, a linear dimension in the direction of the axis is shortened, which makes the configuration compact.

Abstract: A first side-pressure, that is supplied to cylinder 74 of the drive pulley 71 or to cylinder 78 of the driven pulley 75 as pressure determining the transmission torque capacity of continuously variable transmission mechanism 70, is supplied to a frictional engagement element, where it is used as the working hydraulic fluid pressure. The transmission torque capacity of the frictional engagement element is set to be somewhat lower than the transmission torque capacity of the continuously variable transmission mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6461269
Abstract: A forward-speed/reverse-speed changeover mechanism 6, serving as a motive-force connection/disconnection mechanism, is accommodated into a housing member 8 fixed to a casing 1. To the forward-speed/reverse-speed changeover mechanism 6 an input end of a primary shaft 3 is connected. The housing member 8 rotatably supports the primary shaft 3 via a bearing member 11. On an imaginary line intersecting the primary shaft 3 perpendicularly and passing through the bearing member 11, a load-receiving element 1b, 8b is provided between the housing member 8 and the casing 1. The tension of a belt 17 is received by the load-receiving element 1b, 8b. As a result, it is possible to provide a bearing structure of a continuously variable transmission enabling holding the bearing members of the primary and secondary shafts at their regular positions against the tension of the belt and maintaining an optimum belt-alignment, thereby enhancing the durability of the continuously variable transmission.

  • Patent number: 6460398
Abstract: In a mechanism where movement is transferred from one component to another by frictional contact and where the intensity of the frictional contact can be changed by altering the contact pressure, a method for determining the amount of slippage between the component parts uses a measurement of a value that corresponds to the power loss due to friction, also known as power dissipation, which occurs during the transfer of movement between the component parts. In this measurement, the level of power dissipation is determined in dependence on the contact pressure force, and an increase in the amount of the dissipated power that occurs when the contact pressure force decreases is interpreted as slip.

Abstract: The rigidity of a movable pulley half is enhanced by the rigidity of a cylinder fixed to a back surface of the movable pulley half and influences of a controlled hydraulic pressure and a centrifugal hydraulic pressure which are exerted in a hydraulic fluid chamber partitioned in the cylinder. On the other hand, an annular protruding portion having detection teeth for a rotation sensor is formed on a back surface of an outer circumferential portion of a fixed pulley half, whereby the difference in rigidity between both the pulley halves is reduced by the effect of the annular protruding portion to improve the rigidity of the fixed pulley half, thereby making it possible to allow the variation characteristics of a misalignment relative to a drive ration to approach a characteristic set in advance.

  • Patent number: 6443864
Abstract: A torque transmitting mechanism between coaxial first and second rotary parts, at least one of which should be free to move axially relative to the other part, employs two frames at least one of which is resilient. Both frames surround one of the parts (e.g., a shaft for one adjustable pulley of a continuously variable transmission), one of the frames has spaced-apart sections affixed to the first part, and the other frame has spaced-apart sections affixed to the second part (e.g., to one flange of the adjustable pulley). Rivets and/or other suitable fasteners couple the two frames to each other at locations each of which is spaced apart from a section of one of the frames and from a section of the other frame. Each frame can have a polygonal outline with corners which are alternatingly coupled to the other frame and to the respective rotary part. The braces between the corners of each polygonal frame can be profiled to oppose certain types of deformation but to permit other types of deformation.

Abstract: A continuously variable transmission or an analogous torque transmitting system has two rotary members in the form of wheels, gears or pulleys (such as adjustable pulleys) which are rotatable about parallel axes. An endless flexible element in the form of a link chain, pintle chain or belt has arcuate portions trained over the rotary members and elongated reaches or stretches extending between the arcuate portions. At least one of the stretches is at least partially confined in but movable lengthwise relative to an elongated rail or another suitable guide which at least reduces lateral stray movements of the respective stretch. Abstract: Various configurations of a continuously variable transmission include a drive pulley, a driven pulley and a belt extending therebetween. The drive pulley is generally comprised of a moveable sheave half and a fixed sheave half. The moveable sheave half is freely rotatable relative to the drive shaft and the fixed sheave half. Torque is transferred between the moveable sheave half and the stationary sheave half through the use of a roller bearing and channel race arrangement; however, the roller bearings are freely translatable within the channel races. The continuously variable transmission also features a differential positioned between the two output pulleys and an articulating member positioned between the two input pulleys. These two members operate together to eliminate bucking of the belts caused by differences in driven speeds of the two driven pulleys in a parallel configuration of the variable speed transmission. Additionally, a method of assembling the transmission is also described.
