Abstract: A speed adjusting device for a drill includes two pulley assemblies between which a belt is connected. Each pulley assembly has a fixed disk and a movable disk so that an effective diameter that the belt engages the pulley assembly can be changed by adjusting a distance between the disks. One of the pulley assembly driven by a motor shaft has a spring which is biased between the movable disk and a motor. A pressing member presses the movable disk of the other pulley assembly which is connected to an output shaft. A lifting device can be operated to adjust the pressing member to allow the spring to change the distance between the other pulley assembly so as to obtain different effective diameter in each pulley assembly.

  • Patent number: 6398679
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission has dual driving connections extending between a first shaft and a second shaft. The driving connections generally include a drive pulley, a driven pulley and a belt. The pulleys each comprise a fixed portion and an axially moveable portion. Movement between the two portions changes an effective diameter of the pulley. The moveable portions of the drive pulley are positioned next to one another on the first shaft and the moveable portions are interposed between the fixed portions of the drive pulleys. The fixed portions of the driven pulleys, on the other hand, are interposed between the moveable portions. The driven pulleys are free to rotate relative to the second shaft. A differential is positioned between the fixed portions of the driven pulleys, connects the two fixed portions and transfers the torque from the driven pulleys to the second shaft.

  • Patent number: 5468192
Abstract: The present invention provides a radial drive connection between a movable flange and the shaft of an adjustable pulley. Specifically the movable flange is driven through the use of supports fixed to the shaft which radially fix the movable flange while allowing for axial movement. The supports are provided through a rigid disc splined to the shaft. The disc has an annular extension extending therefrom. Attached at one end to the disc and at the opposite end to the extension is at least one guide. Each guide includes a bolt or pin and an annular sleeve. The movable flange is configured to have a foot which has an annular wall to it. Through this wall the movable flange slidably engages the guide and provides a radial drive connection. Because the wall and guide slide, however, the movable flange is permitted to move in the axial direction.

Abstract: A continuous V-belt transmission comprising: a primary pulley and a secondary pulley individually including two sheaves supported on shafts and made axially movable relative to each other; a belt made to run on the two pulleys; mechanical actuators individually including first members and second members for moving the movable sheaves of the two pulleys on the basis of the relative rotations of the two members: and pressure regulating mechanisms for applying an axial force corresponding to a transmission torque to at least one of the pulleys. In an unshifted state, the rotations of the pulleys are transmitted from the externally threaded portions integrated with the movable sheaves to the carriers of the planetary gear mechanisms so that they are transmitted through the ring gears to toe internally threaded portions on the basis of the sun gears being stopped. At this time, the externally threaded portions and the internally threaded portions are rotated integrally with the pulleys at the same r.p.m.

The valving means allowing for the relative movement of the second variable pulley's movable sheave includes a valving arrangement operative to regulate the secondary apply pressure at or below the hydraulic source pressure and distinct from the primary line pressure. Control signals are developed to prevent belt slip and to efficiently launch a vehicle, maintain the necessary primary to secondary clamping force ratio in overdrive conditions, and avoid overpressurization of the secondary servo for many vehicle operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 4735598
Abstract: Pulleys are provided with load cam mechanisms which exert axial forces corresponding to transmitted torque, and actuator means such as ball screw mechanisms which shift the movable sheaves of both pulleys in axial direction, wherein the axial forces occuring at the pulleys are carried by their shafts and do not act on the housing. A counter shaft is located between the primary and secondary shafts, the countershaft being rotated to drive the actuator means through gearing such as gearwheels, to alter the drive ratio. During power transmission, the axial forces acting on the movable sheaves of primary and secondary pulleys are converted into torque by the actuator means, where the torques are transmitted to the counter shaft in the form of counteracting torques, so that alteration of drive ratio can be made with slight effort on the counter shaft, equivalent ot the difference between the counteracting torques.

  • Patent number: 4380444
Abstract: A variable ratio belt drive in which a pair of pulleys each having axially movable flanges are driven by a belt and in which the ratio of the pulleys can be changed and for all ratio changes, the load between the pulley and the belt is proportional to the useful tangential force at the belt and its friction coefficient with the pulley to produce only the necessary pressure between the pulley flanges and the belt to transmit the power applied to one pulley to the other pulley. The force on the flanges of the pulleys results from control plates having opposed control surfaces of a particular configuration which are forced apart in response to the application of torque to move the pulley flanges axially toward each other with the required force. One embodiment uses a plurality of control surfaces to increase the movement of pulley flanges and thereby the maximum ratio that can be obtained.
