The compression coil spring urges the moving sheave member toward the fixed sheave member. The outside spring guide prevents the compression coil spring from buckling during compression.

    Abstract: A variable speed transmission of the continuously variable type. The transmission includes an input pulley having primary and secondary sheaves and an output pulley having primary and secondary sheaves. The primary and secondary sheaves of the input pulley are mounted on a first axle shaft carried by an actuator plate and the primary and secondary sheaves of the output pulley are carried on a second axle shaft carried by the actuator plate. The input shaft of the transmission carries pin mounted roller bearings which are received in skewed slots in an actuator sleeve so that the actuator sleeve is moved axially along the input shaft in response to variations in torque loading. The actuator plate is annular and includes a central circumferential groove receiving pin mounted roller bearings carried by the actuator sleeve so that the actuator plate, and the axle shafts carried thereby, undergoes the same axial movement as the actuator sleeve in response to variations in torque loading.

    Abstract: A rotary shaft and a rotating body are connected in such a way as to stably control the tilt of a wafer platen in an ion implanter. The rotary shaft has a key way and the rotating body has a boss into which the rotary shaft extends. A key integrates the rotary shaft and the rotary body so that they rotate together without slipping relative to each other. An end cap is screwed onto the rotary body over the end of the rotary shaft and the key. As a result, the wafer platen can be maintained at an accurate orientation or tilt relative to the ion beam produced by the implanter.

Each pulley assembly has a fixed disk and a movable disk so that an effective diameter that the belt engages the pulley assembly can be changed by adjusting a distance between the disks. One of the pulley assembly driven by a motor shaft has a spring which is biased between the movable disk and a motor. A pressing member presses the movable disk of the other pulley assembly which is connected to an output shaft. A lifting device can be operated to adjust the pressing member to allow the spring to change the distance between the other pulley assembly so as to obtain different effective diameter in each pulley assembly.

    Abstract: Various configurations of a continuously variable transmission include a drive pulley, a driven pulley and a belt extending therebetween. The drive pulley is generally comprised of a moveable sheave half and a fixed sheave half. The moveable sheave half is freely rotatable relative to the drive shaft and the fixed sheave half. Torque is transferred between the moveable sheave half and the stationary sheave half through the use of a roller bearing and channel race arrangement; however, the roller bearings are freely translatable within the channel races. The continuously variable transmission also features a differential positioned between the two output pulleys and an articulating member positioned between the two input pulleys. These two members operate together to eliminate bucking of the belts caused by differences in driven speeds of the two driven pulleys in a parallel configuration of the variable speed transmission. Additionally, a method of assembling the transmission is also described.

Torque for effecting rotation of the respective pulley main bodies (18, 19) relative to the rotating shaft (15) is converted into a force, which causes both pulley main bodies (18, 19) to approach each other in equal amounts of stroke.

    Abstract: An automatic variable speed centrifugal clutch with belt tightening assembly is characterized by even transmission of rotational drive to a pair of belts and includes a rotating spindle and clutch plate having an adjustable centrifugally operable belt tightening mechanism. The belt tightening mechanism includes a clutch drum and a spacer which define recesses for receiving the belts to be driven. Slide rails slidably inserted through slide rail holes in the clutch drum and spacer, and connected at their ends to the clutch plate and spindle flange rotationally interlock the clutch assembly yet allow for longitudinal displacement of the clutch drum and spacer means relative to the spindle flange. As the spindle rotates, the clutch drum presses the spacer against a flange of the spindle to evenly drive the belts while compensating for differences in belt size.
