  • Patent number: 9816598
Abstract: A key pulley segment in a synchronized, segmentally interchanging pulley transmission system is either first or last in a pulley segment set to engage an endless member. The first or last key segment teeth to engage or disengage, respectively, are shortened or completely trimmed, and the adjacent pulley segment to the key segment is elongated such that the inward portion of the tooth profile extends toward the key segment. Shortened tooth or teeth and an elongated adjacent segment together allow for many pulley segments to be designed as key segments. Completely trimmed teeth may be engineered to create a supporting surface for the endless member on the key segment. The elongated adjacent segment may have an extending portion which slidably mates with the supporting surface of the key segment, thereby receiving radial support therefrom.

Abstract: A variable diameter belt type power transfer assembly having a drive sheave and a driven sheave, both of which are adjustable and include a pair of opposing coaxial flanges, one of which is axially movable relative to the other, is disclosed wherein both flanges of the drive sheave are provided with first and second belt engaging surfaces flaring radially outwardly with respect to each other so as to define first and second variable diameter belt receiving grooves therebetween. A dual range of velocity ratios between the drive sheave and the driven sheave is obtainable by selectively positioning a drive belt in the respective variable diameter belt receiving grooves.

  • Patent number: 5074826
Abstract: A variable speed transmission in which the output speed is infinitely adjustable within a given speed range and is accurately controlled. The variable speed transmission includes two pulley assemblies that are rotatably connected by an endless chain, control levers and a control screw for varying the effective pitch radius of at least one of the pulley assemblies and the associated chain. The output from one of the pulley assemblies serves as the elliptical ball bearing assembly input that serves to deform a nonrigid external gear of a flexible gear assembly. The output from the other pulley assembly through gears controls a round rigid internal gear that intermittently meshes with the nonrigid external gear. This arrangement provides extremely accurate speed control of the output from the flexible gear assembly that comes form the nonrigid external gear. The pulley assemblies, the endless chain, control levers, and the flexible gear assembly are located within the same compact hollow unitary housing.

  • Patent number: 4816008
Abstract: Drive mechanism, particularly for use with a bicycle, of the type having variable diameter drive and driven members connected by an endless belt which engages adjustable segments on the members. Through a control member the drive ratio can be adjusted to multiple, discrete settings. Belt wrap is maintained between the belt and the drive and driven members at all settings by two idlers which are independently supported for movement. A locking rail is used to release and secure the segments on the members and a split clutch is used with the driven member for easy rear wheel removal. The mechanism has a lost motion device to accommodate forward and rearward pedaling without harming the drive mechanism. The drive mechanism is modular in contruction so it can be used with frames of varying sizes and the drive mechanism can be quickly removed from or assembled to the bicycle frame when replacement is desired.

  • Patent number: 4516960
Abstract: A variable speed chain drive includes a driven pulley which supports radially adjustable drivers, the drivers defining a wedge-shaped opening in which the chain is received and frictionally captured. The drivers, which may include cooperating clamp and drive members mounted from the disks which define the pulley, are positioned by an adjusting mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4504022
Abstract: An expandable feed roller has two separate side-by-side discs fitted on a rotatable drive shaft. Each disc has circumferentially spaced fins extending inward toward the other disc and inclined toward the shaft. The fins of the two discs are interdigitated to form a thread-receiving valley between them. One of the discs is fixed to the shaft but the other is slidable axially along the shaft toward and away from the other disc so as to change the effective circumference of the base of the thread-receiving valley between the discs. A spring urges the two discs apart against an adjustment mechanism operable to change the relative axial positions of the discs while the drive shaft is rotating.

  • Patent number: 4453923
Abstract: A variable diameter pulley assembly for use with a power transmission belt and adapted to be connected to a shaft comprising opposed sets of axial and radial movable generally triangular or trapezoidal-shaped flange members, the sides of opposed sets being in substantial engagement to provide at all pulley diameters a generally cylindrical and continuous surface for belt engagement. A pair of axially movable hubs supports the flange members, and each hub has guides for guiding the flange members in their axial and radial movements. A central cam member with conical cam surfaces may be provided which cooperates with cam follower surfaces of the flange members whereby axial movement of the flange members causes radial movement thereof.

  • Patent number: 4342559
Abstract: A load-responsive variable diameter pulley in a drive system using a driving pulley and a driven pulley functionally connected by a belt. The basic pulley assembly includes two spaced apart parallel sideplates concentric to a hub. One plate is fixed to the hub while the other is movable angularly about the pulley axis relative to the fixed plate. Slots are provided in the surfaces of both plates and a plurality of arcuate belt-engaging segments located between the plates are provided with laterally extending pins that are received in the slots. In the basic pulley a spring normally urges the movable plate to bias it and belt-engaging segments to the position defining maximum pulley diameter. The slots in the fixed plates are in pairs and the individual slots are not parallel to each other. The slots are designed so that the chord of the effective arc of the arcuate segment guided in the slots is always perpendicular to a radius of the pulley.
