  • Patent number: 7713154
Abstract: A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for use in applications where a transmission is desired to change the speed of the motor relative to the speed of the final drive. The CVT has a set of chains or belts that are mounted around a set of pins set in radially cut slots of a set of spindles so that the pattern of pins are able to expand and contract radially around the CVT axis via these slots. Sprockets that freely spin in either direction unless a chain or belt has fully seated on at least one tooth are arranged on the pins so that only one sprocket engages one chain or belt allowing for smooth ratio changes while the load in engaged. The spindles share a set of springs that act to return the transmission to a higher ratio at moments the load is overcome.

  • Patent number: 6413180
Abstract: A power transmitting mechanism includes a first silent chain trained around teeth of a first driving sprocket and a teeth of first driven sprocket, and a second silent chain trained around teeth of a second driving sprocket and teeth of a second driven sprocket. The first and second driving sprockets are mounted in parallel relationship on a single drive shaft, and the teeth of the first driving sprocket are offset from the teeth of the second driving sprocket by one-half pitch. The pitch of the driving sprockets is a random pitch which varies in a random pattern along the circumference of the sprockets. The silent chains have a single pitch. By thus phasing the two driving sprocket, periodic meshing impact sounds emitted from the respective silent chains are canceled out or offset each other. The periodicity of the meshing impact sound is agitated by the random tooth pitch of the driving sprockets to such an extent that resonance sound is sufficiently reduced.

  • Patent number: 5857931
Abstract: A traveling chain mechanism has spaced sprockets with an endless chain trained around them. A traveling chain is transferable between the sprockets radially inward of the endless chain. The speed ratio between the sprockets is dependent upon which sprocket has the traveling chain connected thereto. By transferring the traveling chain between the sprockets, the speed ratio is changed. A derailer mechanism initiates the transfer of the traveling chain from one sprocket to the other. The derailer mechanism incorporates a pair of axially spaced derailer arms that are axially movable into the path of a long pin on a lead link of the traveling chain. The long pin engages the arms to cause pivoting thereof thereby aligning a ramp thereon with the shorter pins on each link. The derailer arms guide the traveling chain to a guide track for transportation by the endless chain to the other sprocket.

  • Patent number: 5810237
Abstract: A drive assembly for operatively rotating a web spreading roll of a paper mill or the like utilizes a toothed belt for transferring rotational motion from a motor-operated driving toothed pulley to a freewheeling or otherwise rotatably mounted driven toothed pulley. The driven pulley is, in turn, coupled to at least one of the plural rotary driven roll segments of and that are carried on the curved shaft of the web spreading roll. To minimize wear on the toothed belt, the driving and driven pulleys are fixedly mounted in positions of permanent alignment with one another, as by mounting both the drive motor and the driven pulley on the shaft bearings housing located at one end of the spreading roll shaft. A flexible coupling, as in the form of a rubber or otherwise suitably resilient bellows or the like, connects the driven pulley to the at least one roll segment for transferring rotation of the driven pulley to the roll segment so as to operatively rotate the web spreading roll.

  • Patent number: 5762575
Abstract: A chain drive mechanism has spaced sprockets about which is trained an endless chain. A traveling chain is disposed radially inward of the endless chain and encircles one or the other of the sprockets during power transmission. The traveling chain is transportable between the sprockets so that the speed ratio therebetween can be altered. When encircling a sprocket, the traveling chain is locked or latched to the sprocket. The lock mechanism has a retainer pin and a locking pin. The locking pin is connected for conjoint movement with the retainer pin which is positioned in latched and unlatched positions.
