  • Patent number: 7568992
Abstract: A two-stage, continuously variable transmission used to power a machine, incorporates self-adjusting features while ensuring a positive engagement. Power from an engine is transferred via a rotatable shaft of a first stage, which engages with a first stage differential gear. The first stage gear delivers power to each of (1) a low ratio and (2) a high ratio first stage output half shafts. A second stage includes each of (1) a low ratio and (2) a high ratio second stage input half shaft. The low ratio half shafts are engaged providing a first pathway. The high ratio half shafts are engaged providing a second pathway, both shafts in positive engagement. A second stage differential gear receives low and high gear ratio power simultaneously, over the first and second pathways and aggregates the power to be output at an automatically selected optimum gear ratio for the machine, determined by the kinetic status of the machine.

  • Patent number: 5254051
Abstract: A continuously variable hydro-mechanical transmission wherein a power source input is split into three inputs. A torque provided by a power source proceeds to a bevel gear of a center boss. The torsional force of the lowest mechanical gear ratio is passed by means of an overrunning clutch to a planetary gear, the ratio being selected according to a required application. The torque of an intermediary gear translates hydrodynamically through the action of a fluid clutch to a collecting planetary gear at a given appropriate ratio. The torque of a direct gear translates mechanically through the action of a box drum directly to a torque output shaft. All three gear ratios participate in the transmission of torque simultaneously--either actively or passively.

The variable transmission (5) has a variator (11) which may be of the belt and pulley, hydraulic or electric types. The variable transmission (5) is more efficient than heretofore because power is split within the variable transmission (5) by a power split differential (9) between the variator (11) and a main power output shaft (3). Thus, the variator (11) is only called upon to handle a portion of the power when the variable transmission (5) is in operation. Thus, power losses in the variator (11) are substantially reduced.

Abstract: A transmission system for use in automobile vehicles and in which the ratio-varying unit is unidirectional and is of the continuously-variable type, particularly the toroidal-race rolling traction type. An epicyclic combination and a hydrokinetic element are located in succession between the output of the ratio-varying unit and the final drive output of the system as a whole. The epicyclic combination and hydrokinetic element help to overcome two typical problems of transmissions with such ratio-varying units, namely low output torque range and difficulty in starting from rest, and this arrangement and the torque-splitting action of the epicyclic combination enable a smaller element to be used than would be possible if it were located on the input side of the ratio-varying unit. The system also includes a reversing mechanism located downstream of the ratio unit and preferably between the hydrokinetic element and the final drive output.
