Patent number: 5378217Abstract: An air resistance device to be held in the hand of user while undertaking exercise, this device having a grasping portion and a frame portion. The grasping portion comprises a relatively straight member upon one end of which an arm clamping member is disposed, and adjacent the other end of which a handle to be grasped by the hand of the user is disposed. The frame portion is attached adjacent the handle and is of elongate rectangular configuration, with its length exceeding its width. The length of the frame portion extends generally in the same direction as the relatively straight member. The frame portion is relatively rigid and configured to receive a membrane thereon through which air cannot easily pass. Therefore, upon a membrane being attached to the frame portion, a user can derive exercise by attempting to move the device rapidly against the resistance of the ambient air. Different versions of a foldable handle arrangement are taught, and the membrane may be integral with the frame portion.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1993Date of Patent: January 3, 1995Inventor: Frank A. Patent number: 5375861Abstract: An improved stroller allows a runner to bring a baby along while running. The improvement comprises an elongate connector which flexes near each end and is rigid in the middle. One end of the connector is attached to the stroller and the other to the user, thus eliminating the need for the runner to use his or her hands to control the stroller. This allows the runner to freely swing his or her arms in a natural running motion.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1993Date of Patent: December 27, 1994Inventor: Henry Gifford

Patent number: 5372561Abstract: An exercising device combining a treadmill with an upper-body suspension device is disclosed. An upright frame is supported from the base of the treadmill. A gantry frame is pivotally attached to the upper end of such upright frame. Pneumatic linear actuators are interconnected between upright and gantry frames to provide rotation of said gantry in relation to said upright frame. An upper-body harness is suspended from the gantry frame. Introduction of regulated air pressure into the pneumatic actuators exerts an upward force on the harness and facilitates walking exercise with less than the full gravitational force on the subjects lower extremities.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1994Date of Patent: December 13, 1994Assignee: Lyntech Corp.Inventor: Robert P. Patent number: 5176597Abstract: The racing speed training method uses a support device attached to a belt, harness or seat which encircles or supports some portion of the runner's body. The support device can be freestanding or can be attached to a propulsion means for road or track training. The supports are adjustable and are releasably attached by clips or the like to a belt or harness around the runner's body. The runner will be partially suspended from the device such that when his or her feet hit the ground, less of the runner's weight will impact upon the ground. The amount of lift can be varied by shortening or lengthening the supports, by adjusting the tension of the support, or raising or lowering the frame so that a runner can start training at an artificially-induced lighter impact weight, find his or her optimum form at an increased speed, and then gradually apply the improved speed and form to carry the runner's full weight.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1991Date of Patent: January 5, 1993Inventor: Richard M. Patent number: 5167601Abstract: A leg muscle training device comprises an elongated elastomeric and stretchable tether, a set of leg bindings secured to each end of the tether, and a position adjustable attachment means connected to the tether. Each set of leg bindings includes a thigh binding and a calf binding. The attachment means is designed to provide stationary resistance for the device to provide resistance for the runner moving away from the stationary resistance. The attachment means is preferably a position adjustable loop, and the means for providing stationary resistance is to have a person, such as the trainer, position the loop over the forearm and grasp the lengths of the tether firmly while the runner is moving or exerting motion away, as by running on a treadmill or in place. A method for strengthening and training a runner comprises securing the leg bindings of the device of this invention to both legs of a runner and securing the attachment means of the device to a stationary point of attachment.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1990Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: Red River Valley Sports Medicine InstituteInventor: John P.
