  • Patent number: 7608034
Abstract: Apparatus and method for conditioning an edge of a sheet to be bound so that the edge is conducive to accepting heat activated adhesives used in conventional binding. The sheet is first bent in one direction to form a folding line, with the fold line being a short distance from the edge of the sheet to be conditioned and with that distance being determined primarily by the thickness of the sheet. The bend in the sheet is typically 90 degrees, with the radii of curvature of the opposite sheet surfaces at the fold line being unequal so that a shear force is applied near the sheet end thereby tending to tear or fracture in interior of the sheet near the end. Typically the sheet is then bent in an opposite direction along the folding line so as to produce an opposite shear force that reinforces the creation of tears and fractured in the sheet.

The upper end of the punch adaptor is tubular and has therein axially extending slots forming radially compressible sectors which can be forced into gripping engagement with an operating shaft when the jaws on the clamp member are forced closed over the punch adaptor.

  • Patent number: 5001956
Abstract: A device for perforating a tubular film of plastic material flattened to form a roll of pre-formed bags for individual separation from the roll, has a perforating knife with a plurality of pointed teeth spaced along the bottom edge thereof disposed for reciprocal piercing of a continuous tubular film of plastic passed over a work support surface having a hollow slot therein. The teeth are hollow-ground to provide a slightly arcuate cutting edge along each tooth that produces a non linear perforation in the tubular film of plastic and partially seaprates the top layer of the plastic from the bottom layer. The teeth are spaced apart a desired distance to leave sufficient attaching tabs so that the roll of bags does not prematurely pull apart. Minimum tension and penetrating pressure are achieved with the present invention and result in less distortion and unwanted tearing of the end product and greater life for the piercing blade and a more easily separated and opened bag.

Abstract: In a multi-bobbin machine for making paper booklets e.g. of interleaved cigarette paper, a multiplicity of strips from respective supply bobbins are interfolded and converged to form a booklet strand which is cut to length by a cutting station which reciprocates along the strand so that booklet lengths enter it and are cut. A rotating non-circular shaft passes through the cutting station and a sleeve in the cutting station slides axially along the shaft as the station reciprocates and rotates with the shaft. The sleeve is independently linked to a strand clamp and to a cutting knife which are separately timed and move along different paths, the strand clamp moving longitudinally towards and away from the strand while the knife makes a slicing movement across and through the strand.

Abstract: A flat platen-type cutting and creasing press for sheet material includes a continuously moving closed loop conveyor that carries sheet gripping means in a feed direction along a generally horizontal feed path extending through a sheet loading station, a sheet unloading station, and a cutting station having die elements positioned thereat with the cutting station being positioned between the sheet loading and unloading stations. Eccentric shafts rotating at uniform speed translates platens carrying the die elements along a circular path positioned for the die elements to operatively engage and thereby fully cut a sheet moving along the feed path through said cutting station. Rotating counterbalancing weights on the eccentric shafts are disposed between points on the platens that are connected to the eccentric shafts.

A conventional bag machine produces web segments provided with a group of centrally located holes and each segment is transferred by a conventional rotary transfer device to one of a plurality of platforms which are sequentially located at a stacking station. The platforms are provided with upwardly projecting pins on which the web sections are stacked. After the accumulation of a desired number of web segments on the platform located at the stacking station, the loaded platform is indexed away from the stacking station to a perforating station and then to a cutting or cutting and blocking station to thereby produce two bag stacks, each of which are retained on the associated platform by the pins.

  • Patent number: 4609366
Abstract: An apparatus for making plastic handle bags from an advancing flat tubular web includes a knife supported above the moving web and reciprocated transversely by a cam roller to produce a sinusoidal-wave-like cut longitudinally of the web. A support guide having a slot at least as wide as the wave amplitude is positioned beneath the web so that in the event of an interruption of feed the guide lowers, withdrawing the web from the knife, which continues to reciprocate, thereby avoiding start-up inertial friction or chatter. Downstream of the cutting station a detour assembly phase shifts one of the half-tubes 180.degree. to align the transversely extending bag edges for heat sealing. The cutting support assembly is longitudinally movable of the web.

  • Patent number: 4605392
Abstract: In an apparatus for making plastics carrier bags from a web of tubular film of thermoplastic material, a feeding mechanism intermittently conveys the webs by one bag width and a severing mechanism cuts the web into half tubes along an undulating curve. A carriage displaceable in the machine frame transversely to the feeding direction of the web is reciprocated by a drive derived from a first rotating control cam through gearing. A cutting knife pivotable in the carriage about its longitudinal axis passes through the plane of the tube about an axis perpendicular thereto and is so controlled by an oscillating drive derived from a second rotating control cam that its edge is substantially tangential to the undulating curve at the cutting point. A detour assembly retards one of the half tubes to bring the bag side edge zones into phase and each half tube is formed into bags by a transverse sever-sealing device.

Abstract: A conventional fastener attacher is fixedly mounted on a support. A stack of hooks is situated in a retainer which is movably mounted with respect to the support. A dispensing slide is movably mounted on the retainer, below the stack. As the retainer is moved towards the attacher, the slide automatically moves relative to the retainer to align a hook with the attacher. Slide movement is achieved through the use of a cam surface on the support and a cam follower extending from the slide. A single air cylinder moves both the retainer and the slide. The retainer can hold the stack in one of two orientations.
