Folding By Roller Patents (Class 493/434)
  • Patent number: 7022059
Abstract: A chopper folder for a rotary press folds signatures which are periodically conveyed, one signature at a time, from a folding machine. The chopper folder includes a pair of folding rollers for folding a signature parallel to the conveyance direction, a prime mover, a crank arm fixed to an output shaft of the prime mover to be rotated together with the output shaft, a blade holder connected to the crank arm via a link, a chopper blade held in the blade holder and adapted to push the signature from an upper surface thereof in order to insert the signature into a space between the pair of folding rollers, and guide units for restricting motion of the blade holder such that the blade holder reciprocates only in a direction perpendicular to a conveyance plane along which the signature is conveyed.

  • Patent number: 6942610
Abstract: A web folding machine for folding a continuously fed web into folded segments is disclosed. The machine includes a frame upon which the other components of the machine are mounted. A web supply provides continuous web material to these other components of the machine, with multiple feeds of the web material being processed in parallel relationship to one another. In one embodiment of the invention, web is pulled from a web supply by a pull roll station, which engages the web material to feed it at an approximately constant feed rate to a metering roll station. After proceeding through the metering roll station, the web reaches the folding station, where the web it is folded into a folded segment. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the web is first fed to a folding board that folds the web longitudinally. After the web is folded longitudinally by the folding board, it is fed to a pivoting marker web guide station that periodically pivots to vertically displace the web to create a marker.

Abstract: Here is disclosed a method and apparatus for folding a continuously fed in two. The web is folded along guide means defining a folding guide line with a fold angle gradually reduced. In the course of gradually reducing the fold angle, a plurality of guide rolls through are pressed against transversely opposite side edge portions of the web. Immediately before the stage on which the web is completely folded in two, there are provided detector means adapted to detect actual positions of the respective side edge portions and swing rolls located upstream of these detector means adapted to change a crossing angle of the web with respect to a machine direction. Actuators interposed between the detector means and the swing guide rolls cause the swing guide rolls to swing and thereby to move the side edge portions toward predetermined positions.

  • Patent number: 6896648
Abstract: A jaw cylinder has sets of fixed and movable jaws arranged at circumferential spacings thereon for folding the printed sheets into signatures as the sheets are thrust into the jaw cavities by folding blades on a folding cylinder. The movable jaws are mounted fast on respective jaw carrier shafts for pivotal motion into and out of engagement with the fixed jaws. For such pivotal motion of the movable jaws, the jaw carrier shafts are engaged via cam followers with a jaw drive cam of annular shape mounted to the frame, so that the movable jaws successively pivot toward and away from the fixed jaws upon rotation of the jaw cylinder. A timing screw acts between the jaw drive cam and the frame to cause angular displacement of the former relative to the latter about the axis of the jaw cylinder, in order to time the opening and closing of all the sets of jaws to the thrusting of the sheets off the surface of the folding cylinder by the folding blades.

In the first position the idler roller and a fold roller form a nip. The inducer further comprises a blade adjacent to the idler roller. A first side of the blade and another fold roller define a portion of the feed path adjacent to the another fold roller. When the inducer is in a second position an auxiliary feed path is formed and the sheet may travel along the auxiliary feed path and subsequently be buckled by the blade when the inducer returns to the first position.

Abstract: Sheet media is folded in a folding apparatus. The apparatus has an input conveyor, first and second pairs of positioning rollers, first and second folding mechanisms, and first and second media paths. The media is conveyed into the apparatus with the input conveyor. The input conveyor may be a pair of input rollers or any other type of media conveyor. The media is buckled by capturing and positioning the media with a first pair of positioning rollers, while the media is conveyed with the input conveyor. The buckle in the media is captured with the first folding mechanism and drawn from the input conveyor and the first pair of positioning rollers. The first folding mechanism may be a pair of folding rollers or any other mechanism for capturing a buckle in the media. The media is buckled again by capturing and positioning the media with the second pair of positioning rollers, while the media is drawn by the first folding mechanism.

Abstract: There is disclosed a method and apparatus for making a looped label and accumulating labels in a stack. An intermediate portion of the label is inserted into the nip of a pair of rotating rolls which fold or loop the label into two side-by-side or face-to-face label portions. The looped label is transported between the nip of a pair of pressing rolls which press or iron the label at the fold line while the label is stationary between the rolls to maintain the label in the folded condition. From there the label is passed into a stacker in which successively looped labels are stacked.

The configuration includes folding rolls which rest against each other in a resilient manner and have a given diameter. Pressure rolls with a diameter which is smaller than half the given diameter are disposed in such a manner as to be adjustable and axially symmetrical in relation to the folding rolls. Furthermore, a stop can be adjusted into a region between the pressure rolls and at the same time is a diverting element.

  • Patent number: 5980444
Abstract: A pivotedly mounted pressure roller unit, associated with which is a folding roller pair, is arranged on the transport path of a sheet to be folded. The pressure roller unit has a first and a second roller group, having rollers offset alternatingly eccentrically with respect to one another and mounted in independently rotatable fashion, which coact with the folding rolls in such a way that simultaneously, the rollers of the first roller group can be laid nonpositively against the one folding roller, and the rollers of the other roller group against the other folding roller. The transport speed (v.sub.2) of the folding rolls can be reduced to a lower transport speed (v.sub.1), thus causing a transport roller pair driven at an unchanging transport speed to bulge the sheet into an arc prior to entry into the folding rolls. By pivoting the pressure roller unit against the folding rolls, the arc and the trailing end of the sheet are transported simultaneously by the pressure roller unit.
