Patent number: 5980444Abstract: A pivotedly mounted pressure roller unit, associated with which is a folding roller pair, is arranged on the transport path of a sheet to be folded. The pressure roller unit has a first and a second roller group, having rollers offset alternatingly eccentrically with respect to one another and mounted in independently rotatable fashion, which coact with the folding rolls in such a way that simultaneously, the rollers of the first roller group can be laid nonpositively against the one folding roller, and the rollers of the other roller group against the other folding roller. The transport speed (v.sub.2) of the folding rolls can be reduced to a lower transport speed (v.sub.1), thus causing a transport roller pair driven at an unchanging transport speed to bulge the sheet into an arc prior to entry into the folding rolls. By pivoting the pressure roller unit against the folding rolls, the arc and the trailing end of the sheet are transported simultaneously by the pressure roller unit.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1997Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventor: Andreas Dickhoff

Patent number: 5520604Abstract: The folded edges (F) of paper products (P), such as newspapers and magazines, are creased in accordance with the process of the invention, in that at least one pair of creasing tools (W. 1, W.2) act at a creasing point from either side against the folded edge and the creasing point is moved along the folded edge (F) by a relative movement between the product (P) and at least one of the creasing tools. The facing creasing surfaces of the creasing tools (W.1, W.2) are advantageously designed and arranged in such a way that the folded edge is curved at the creasing point, which is achieved in that a perpendicular on the creasing surfaces forms an acute angle at the creasing point with the movement direction (B) of the latter. The creasing tools can also be pressed against one another with a pressing force. During the creasing process the product must be held by holding means. The latter simultaneously serve as conveying means, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1994Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Assignee: Ferag AGInventor: Walter Reist

Patent number: 5057069Abstract: A method and apparatus for folding a length of material includes forming first and second transverse folds at opposite ends of the material whereby the material defines first and second end parts and a central part. Longitudinal corrugations are formed in the first and second end parts in order to reduce a transverse dimension of the first and second end parts. A third transverse fold is formed in the central part in order to bring the first and second end parts into superposition. Patent number: 4508528Abstract: In a cross-folder for flexible pads such as diapers a wide first conveyor belt runs over a segment of the periphery of a rotationally driven drum. A narrow second conveyor belt runs in parallelism with the first belt for transporting unfolded pads toward the drum and a third conveyor belt runs in parallelism with the first belt for transporting folded pads away from the drum. The drum carries diametrically opposite pairs of slidable members that are reciprocated radially inwardly and outwardly as the drum rotates under the influence of cam rollers on the members which run in stationary cam grooves. Pivotable levers are carried on the slidable members, respectively. The levers have fingers for gripping the pads at their mid-line. The levers have cam follower rollers which are forced to follow cam grooves carried by the drum and, under the influence of the slidable members, the levers are actuated to grip and release the pads to effect folding.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1982Date of Patent: April 2, 1985Assignee: Curt G. Patent number: 4265437Abstract: A method and apparatus for folding multi-sheet paper products, especially for forming a further longitudinal fold at newspapers having a transverse break. During the formation of the fold or shortly before there is produced a bend in the sheets to be folded, whose curvature is opposite to the curvature of the fold to be formed. In this way there are avoided ray-like extending crease folds in the innermost sheets of the folded product. The apparatus for performing the method contemplates providing a folding element having at least one pair of folding edges which extend in the same direction at their effective region and are laterally spaced from one another, so that there is left free an intermediate space into which there can be displaced the innermost sheets of the product to be folded during the folding operation. The folding edges can be formed at the circumference of rotating, preferably coaxial folding disks, which coact with a smooth or profiled counter disk.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1978Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Ferag AGInventors: Walter Reist, Werner Glatz
