Folding By Passive Reaction Member Patents (Class 493/446)
  • Patent number: 11039961
Abstract: A method and apparatus to transfer and fold a partially folded absorbent article. The transfer apparatus includes a frame that is rotatable about a first axis of rotation and a transfer member that is rotatable about a second axis of rotation. The transfer member includes a receiving surface. While advancing absorbent article, the transfer member rotates the absorbent article about the second axis of rotation. The partially folded absorbent article is transferred to a folding apparatus. The folding apparatus advances the partially folded absorbent article such that the end regions of the belt of the partially folded absorbent article are directed away from the folding apparatus. The end regions are engaged by a folding assembly. The folding assembly guides and/or pushes the end regions toward the central region of the belt and/or the chassis to form a folded absorbent article.

Abstract: A folding system is provided for folding at least one wing extending from a central chassis of each of a plurality of absorbent articles formed from a continuous moving web moving in a longitudinal direction. The folding system has a wing-folding conveyor and at least one elongated, folding plow, which has an entrance end, an exit end and an inner edge that define a twist axis. The folding plow has a contoured surface having a configuration defined by a twist angle that increases along the twist axis from zero degrees near the entrance end to 180 degrees near the exit end. The wing-folding conveyor moves the central chassis along the inner edge of the folding plow and the wing slides against the contoured surface from the entrance end to the exit end, such that the wing folds around the central chassis near the inner edge.

Abstract: An envelope blank is conveyed by a transport system in an envelope making machine to a folding mechanism that folds one or more flaps of the blank. In folding a side flap, the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line is conveyed along a convex face of a plowshare. The plowshare face applies at the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line a force which bends the side flap through an angle of 180.degree. to a position where the flap is folded to overlap the blank. A crease is formed on the score line to permanently set the flap on the blank. The folding of the flap is initiated by the convex face of the plowshare. Extending from the upper edge of the plowshare face is a grid-like network of flexible rods mounted to follow the helical path of the plowshare face. The free edge portion of the flap is supported by the grid to follow the flap leading edge being folded by the plowshare.

  • Patent number: 4725218
Abstract: A pair of facing die sections, preferably constructed of machinable plastic, are biased toward one another and their central regions are spaced to form a shallow gap. Each die section is provided with a tapered folding chamber whose wide end is open at the upstream end of the die section. Each chamber communicates with the gap by means of a shallow slot that extends longitudinally, or in the direction of travel of a tape that is drawn through the gap. The edges of the tape enter the folding chambers as the central main section of the tape enters the upstream end of the gap. While the tape edges are in the chamber they are curled and directed through the slots into the gap. By the time the edges leave the chambers these edges are folded to lie flat against opposite sides of the main section of tape. Means are provided for adjusting the die sections to operate on different widths of tape and to produce desired widths for the folded edges.

Abstract: To prevent buckling of a lowermost one, or a lower group of superposed webs being fed, in superposed relation to a common folding triangle or folding former (1), a driven supply roller (2) is provided which has its circumference formed with projecting pins (6) or the like, long enough to penetrate through the entire stack of the superposed web (8) as it runs over the supply roller, thereby feeding all the webs at the same speed to the folding former. Preferably, a hold-down roller (9) is provided, formed with a circumferential groove (10) aligned with the pins (6) so that the pins can penetrate through the webs and fit into the groove (10).

  • Patent number: 4591354
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for automatically effecting a widthwise folding of a long, flexible web advanced therethrough. The web is trained about a first roller at a point where the folding begins and about a second roller at a point where the folding ends. A displacement edge or bar is mounted in a fixed location equidistant from the first and second rollers, and a portion of the web is trained about the displacement edge or bar during the folding. Webs of different widths are accommodated by adjusting the positions of the first and second rollers without changing the shapes of three similar triangles. The first triangle is defined by a first point where a first edge of the web intersects the first roller, a second point where the same edge of the web intersects the second roller, and a third point where the opposite edge of the web intersects the first roller.

Abstract: A refolding and stacking receptacle for segmented sheet material, particularly computer printout paper. The receptacle has a support for supporting a stack of the material in flat, folded condition, a guideway positioned centrally of the support for receiving the leading end of a moving web of the material fed to the receptacle in an unfolded condition, and a stop in the guideway for arresting the motion of the material on contact. This results in zig-zag folding of the web and its stacking within the receptacle.

Abstract: An apparatus for folding a running web has a deflecting roller supporting the running web; a scoring device for providing a weakening score line in the running web parallel to the running direction thereof for dividing the web into side-by-side arranged first and second web portions; and a folding roller supporting the running web and situated spaced from and downstream of the deflecting roller as viewed in the direction of web advance. The folding roller has a longitudinal axis oriented at least approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the deflecting roller, whereby the running web undergoes an approximately 90.degree. twist and the first web portion of the running web folds over the second web portion along the score line as the running web passes from the deflecting roller onto the folding roller.
