  • Patent number: 9005096
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming patterns on sheet material are disclosed. The method comprises a continuous lateral stretch process for producing zero- or near zero-curvature structures. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises pre-gathering the sheet material in the lateral direction to form longitudinal corrugated folds and then feeding the corrugated material through one or more sets of oscillating formers, preferably articulating discs, to impart folding in the lateral direction. Optionally, the sheet material may be fed through one or more sets of patterned rollers.

  • Patent number: 5876320
Abstract: A continuous sheet folder apparatus is disclosed that can fold any size paper in half with nested inserts inside the paper. The apparatus can also function in an intermittent mode. The half folding apparatus is accomplished by a set of lifting fingers and stationary fingers which interact to curl the sheet leading edge upwards and over until it registers with the trailing edge, passing beneath it. The sheet is then creased in a presser unit. The lifting fingers are spring mounted and biased toward the oncoming sheet.

Abstract: An air bag against side collision, wherein two faces of mutually opposed peripheral wall portions having a substantially rectangular shape are connected by tethers in a strip or band-like shape whereby a distance of separation between the side wall portions in expanding the air bag is restricted. The expanded shape of the air bag is a substantially rectangular plate having four edges. An inner location near a rear edge accommodates an inflator supplying gas for expansion. Two side edges extend substantially parallel with each other from opposite ends of the rear edge and a front edge In a folded state, the front edge side of the air bag is cactus-folded such that the front edge side enters the inner side of the rear edge side of the air bag and approaches the rear edge. Tethers are connected respectively to the peripheral wall portions with a width dimension parallel with folds where the front edge side of the air bag is drawn in.

  • Patent number: 5775733
Abstract: The process comprises the steps of gripping top and bottom boundaries of the face portion of the main panel of the cushion and pulling it so that the front face portion is generally planar and the side panels extend generally outward from the canister. First and second folding combs move inward from the opposite sides of the cushion. From the front a third folding comb moves rearward. Plates of the combs interdigitate with portions of the cushion inbetween, thus creating accordion folds. Fourth and fifth folding combs move in from the sides and their plates interdigitate with the plates of the other three combs, tucking excess portions of the cushion inbetween the accordion folds already formed. The package thus formed is compressed and then moved into the canister. A dust cover is slid over the front of the canister.

  • Patent number: RE35265
Abstract: An automated system is disclosed for folding vehicle air bags so that a small folded-bag profile and a desirable bag deployment pattern results. A machine having numerous moveable arms is controlled by a controller. An edge folding assembly (EFA) of the machine has five arms, including a center arm, two outer blades, and two outwardly facing U-channel forks, which reside between respective outer blades and the center arm. The EFA moves forward so that all of its five arms engage an unfolded air bag. The forks then raise upward to a level at which the outer blades are aligned with a gap between tines in the forks. The outer blades mesh with this gap causing two pleats to be formed in the edge of the bag. Pleat clamps then move inwardly sideways to engage the two pleats and form a third pleat. Then, the EFA is removed from the bag. The pleat clamps clamp top and bottom sections of the bag together while tightly gripping the pleats.
