  • Patent number: 9005096
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming patterns on sheet material are disclosed. The method comprises a continuous lateral stretch process for producing zero- or near zero-curvature structures. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises pre-gathering the sheet material in the lateral direction to form longitudinal corrugated folds and then feeding the corrugated material through one or more sets of oscillating formers, preferably articulating discs, to impart folding in the lateral direction. Optionally, the sheet material may be fed through one or more sets of patterned rollers.

  • Patent number: 8771579
Abstract: A forming device for gathering the width of a traveling web is disclosed. The forming device includes opposing arrays of flute-forming bars that can be interlaced to define therebetween a longitudinal flute-forming labyrinth effective to reduce the width of a web traveling therethrough by a preselected take-up ratio. The flute-forming bars are curved beginning at an entry end of the forming device such that they converge in a lateral direction as they proceed in the machine direction. In this manner, individual elements of the web traveling between the respective arrays in the machine direction follow contour lines along the curved bars or between adjacent ones of the curved bars so that no such element crosses any flute-forming bar in the cross-machine direction as the web travels and is fluted. A corrugating die for introducing a near-net shape to the intermediate-fluted web is also disclosed, as are a corrugating line incorporating these operations and methods for its operation.

Abstract: The invention relates to a paper processing product and, in particular, to a shredder that crinkles paper stripes. The shredder has a shaft set driven by a motor. The shaft set includes at least two shafts rotating in opposite directions. Cutting blade sets are mounted on the shafts. Paper enters the entry of a paper passage formed by the shafts, and gets shredded into chips by the cutting blades. Since the exit of the paper passage is provided with a movable stopper, paper stripes are pushed by the rotating cutting blades to pass the stopper and become crinkled. The stopper is triggered to open by a certain force, letting the paper stripes fall. In addition to the functions of a usual shredder, the paper stripes thus made can be recycled.

  • Patent number: 6926656
Abstract: An apparatus and method for fabricating corrugated composite stiffeners provides a base tool having grooves formed in an outer surface and a roller having a rotating shaft and a removable, lobed, elastomeric member surrounding the shaft. The lobes of the elastomeric member form a radial array around the shaft and match the contours of the grooves in the base tool. A section of prepreg fabric is placed between the roller and the base tool, and the roller is rotated to sequentially engage the lobes with the grooves, the lobes pressing the fabric into the grooves, the fabric conforming to the contours of the grooves. Several layers of fabric are applied, then the elastomeric member is released from the shaft, laid out flat, and placed on the fabric on the base tool, the lobes locating in the grooves. The base tool, fabric, and elastomeric member are enclosed in a vacuum bag and heated to cure the fabric.

  • Patent number: 6913570
Abstract: A folded core structure is produced by embossing fold lines into a flat planar material web, initiating folds along the fold lines on the upper and lower surfaces of the material web, proceeding with the formation of the folds along the fold lines to deform the material web from its two-dimensional starting configuration to a three-dimensional folded configuration, and post-processing the folded material web to stabilize or fix the folded configuration thereof. A composite structural panel is produced by bonding a cover layer onto at least one surface of the folded core structure. An apparatus preferably includes embossing or creasing rolls to form the fold lines in the material web, air nozzles or folding rolls to initiate the folding process, bristle brush rolls to complete the folding process, and further folding rolls to enhance and fix the folded configuration, optionally in connection with heating, cooling, applying a coating onto, or impregnating a resin or binder into the material web.

  • Patent number: 6910996
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a honeycomb structure in a continuous production process includes five process stations. At Station 1 sheets of deformable material are interleaved with a release ply to form a five layer sandwich. At Station 2 the five layer sandwich is corrugated. At Station 3 the two deformable sheets are separated and an adhesive is applied to one. At Station 4 the two deformable sheets are connected to form a single layer honeycomb structure. And at Station 5 a plurality of single layer honeycomb structures are cut and stacked to form a honeycomb structure of a desired thickness.

Abstract: A novel packaging wrap is used in cushioning a product for shipment and is formed from the combination of a layer of pleated sheet material, the pleated material being creased at the apices of each pleat, and a planar layer of sheet material which is adhered to, and preferably, adhesively bonded, to a pleated sheet of kraft paper. The pleated sheet material has a weight in the range from about 30 to 50 pounds and the planar sheet material is preferably tissue paper having a weight of less than about 20 pounds. The pleated sheet material preferably, has a pleat angle in the range from above 45 degrees to below 85 degrees, and most preferably the pleats have an angle of about 50 to 65 degrees. Preferably, the pleats have a height in the range from about 3 sixteenths of an inch to about one half inch, in terms of distance between top planar sheet and bottom planar sheet.

  • Patent number: 6800052
Abstract: A corrugating roll design for a corrugating machine including a pair of parallel, spaced apart, corrugating rolls which rotate in opposite directions on their respective rotational axes, the rotational axes being spaced apart a predetermined distance, and each of the corrugating rolls being formed along its outer peripheral surface with longitudinally extending teeth with tooth tips and tooth roots. Depressions are provided in the tops of the tooth tips of at least one of the corrugating rolls and spaced apart a predetermined distance along the length of the roll. Each of the depressions has a bottom surface which is located to establish a spacing between the bottom surface of the depression and the tooth root of the other corrugating roll at the actual corrugation impression zone in the nip, which spacing is greater than the thickness of the paper medium.

  • Patent number: 6733432
Abstract: A single facer for corrugated paperboard of the type using a very large diameter fluted bonding roll and a much smaller diameter fluted corrugating roll which engages the bonding roll to provide a corrugating nip. The small diameter corrugating roll is made to be resilient so that it is capable of inward deflection in the vicinity of the corrugating nip in order to cushion impact as the rolls interengage along the corrugating nip. This cushioning deflection absorbs vibrational movement due to chordal action of the interengaging flutes, and thereby reduces noise levels, roll wear and improves the quality and consistency of corrugation.

Abstract: A method for making a cigarette container wherein a hollow container body is constructed having an open end which includes a step portion defining a surrounding rim and interior abutments. A plug is prepared which is sized to be received between the rim of the body and to abut the abutments. The plug includes a main plate, a metal layer attached to the main plate, and a heat activated adhesive located adjacent the metal layer and positioned to be immediately adjacent the step portion. An induction heating device is then located adjacent the open end of the body, and activated to heat the metal layer and hence to heat the adjacent adhesive so that after cooling the plug is bonded to the body by the adhesive and the plug thus permanently closes the open end of the body.

The small diameter corrugating roll is made to be resilient by utilizing a thin walled roll shell so that it is capable of inward deflection in the corrugating nip in order to cushion impact and absorb the deflection as the rolls interengage along the nip. This cushioning deflection absorbs vibrational movement due to chordal action of the interengaging flutes, and thereby reduces noise level and roll wear and improves the quality and consistency of corrugation. A modified flute profile, compensating for flute pitch variations between the large diameter bonding roll and small diameter corrugating roll, assures uniform flute-to-flute engagement in the corrugating nip.
