  • Patent number: 7231748
Abstract: An adjusting device that is mounted in a film packaging machine includes a moving mechanism that selectively moves two support blocks in opposite directions and toothed wheels mounted to the support blocks in a symmetric manner and driven by a timing belt that is mechanically coupled to a motor for rotating film drive rollers that are mounted to selected ones of the toothed wheels. Thus, the film drive rollers are movable in opposite directions with the support blocks for adjusting the distance between the rollers, which allows for accommodation of packaging films of different sizes between the rollers, while not interfering with the operation of the film drive roller for driving the packaging film therebetween. This arrangement allows for uniform application of driving force to the film by the film drive rollers and thus realizing smooth and stable movement of the film in packaging an article.

  • Patent number: 5910090
Abstract: An apparatus for positioning a guide slidably mounted on a machine wherein the guide is driven by a lead screw turned by a DC motor through a worm drive gearhead. The DC motor is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) with input from an operator interface and feedback from a hollow shaft encoder attached directly to a shaft extending from the lead screw. Ladder logic programming in the PLC directs the motor to run or stop based on comparing a target position for the guide with the current position based on electrical signals from said encoder. A home position for each guide corresponds to the guide's position when it has moved fully outward encountering an outward stop. The programming also allows manual jogging of the guide through the operator interface. The programming takes up mechanical backlash in the apparatus on each move by overshooting the target position a predetermined amount when a move is made in an outward direction.

When it is time for different operations to be performed on the web the original rollers working on the web are removed from their working position and the rollers previously in the inactive position are moved to the working position. The rollers now in the working position have had their tools aligned for the new operation while they were in the inactive position. The rollers originally in the working position are now in an inactive position where the tools on these rollers can be aligned for another operation. Each pair of rollers is independently driven to spin independent of the position of the roller.

  • Patent number: 5114392
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for folding flaps onto panels formed in folded box blanks, particularly those constructed from corrugated cardboard. As a blank advances along a paper line, a first station engages leading edges of the flaps and forces the flaps into an intermediate plane representing a partial folding operation. Then a second station controls the relative velocities of the flaps along the paper line with respect to the panels to compensate for skew that can occur in other stations. A final station completes the folding operation. The resulting fold is made about an axis, or fold line. if the flap is to be folded about a prestamped score line, the fold and score lines are coextensive. Typically the flaps are folded 180.degree. and the first station produces intermediate folds that are displaced 90.degree. from the panels.

  • Patent number: 5104365
Abstract: Computer controlled method and apparatus for paper sheet bending in a bag making machine for making hand bags, pocketbooks, vanity cases, etc. Two computers are used to store the information needed to allow the machine to make bags of various types and sizes from paper of various qualities and thicknesses. Data concerning the bag itself is stored in the memory of a first computer while data concerning the properties of the paper to be used is stored in the second computer. Both types of data are needed to precisely and automatically position the guide plates for properly locating the desired bends in the paper. The bag type and paper type can be changed quickly with little loss in production time.

  • Patent number: 4841715
Abstract: The invention relates to a packaging apparatus designed so that a belt-like plastic film is placed over articles being transported on a conveyor, the article being wrapped in the film while the film being stretched widthwise, the film being cut between adjacent articles, the cut ends of the film being folded to and brought in adhesion to the underside of the article. A pair of chains run on both sides of a path of transport of the articles, each of the chains having a number of clamps. As the chains run, the clamps place the film over the articles while clamping both side edge portions and pulling them in the widthwise direction. The distance between the chains is adjustable; where a stretchable film having a high draw ratio is used, the interchain distance is broadened, whereas in the case of a heat-shrinkable film having a low draw ratio being used, the interchain distance is narrowed.

Abstract: A carton loading machine has an endless carton conveyor which extends in a horizontal path which in plan view extends in a generally square configuration. A plurality of carton receptacles are mounted on the endless conveyor for movement therewith. Retainer bars are arranged opposite the open ends of the receptacles along at least three sides of the square configuration of the path and these retainer bars are mounted for simultaneous movement with respect to the receptacles so that the space between the retainer bar and the oppositely disposed wall of the receptacle can be adjusted to accommodate articles of different sizes. A further retainer bar is located below the open lower end of the receptacles and extends along at least two sides of the square configuration of the conveyor path. These second retainer bars are also simultaneously adjustable in height with respect to the receptacles so as to accommodate cartons of different length in the receptacles.
