Patent number: 5911224Abstract: A porous element particularly for use as a tobacco smoke filter plug in association with a cigarette or the like wherein the matrix comprises a multiplicity of biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol fibers bonded together at their points of contact to define a tortuous interstitial path for the passage of smoke. Because of the hygroscopic nature of polyvinyl alcohol, commercial production of such products require careful control of the moisture content of the polyvinyl alcohol fiber starting material, usually pre-drying the same to a residual moisture content of 7% by weight or less, and treatment of the low moisture fibrous mass by superheated steam to add about 2.5 to 5% moisture to a final moisture content of about 2.5 to 10%. The steam renders the fiber surface adhesive and, thus, bondable, and also lubricates the gathered fibers to improve processability.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1997Date of Patent: June 15, 1999Assignee: Filtrona International LimitedInventor: Richard M. Patent number: 4736755Abstract: A method of loading nicotine into porous polymeric items consisting essentially of a polyolefin. The method comprises contacting the items with nicotine or nicotine dissolved in a carrier. The polyolefin item, preferably polyethylene or polypropylene, may be loaded with nicotine by several variations on the basic method. The items may be emplaced in a vessel with nicotine and the vessel then closed for a period of time prior to removal of said items.A preferred method of producing porous polyethylene items loaded with nicotine comprises first emplacing porous polyethylene items in a vessel. A solution comprising between about 1% nicotine and about 10% nicotine and a solvent for nicotine demonstrating an adherence for polyethylene surfaces is prepared. A quantity of this solution sufficient to contact at least a majority of the polyethylene items is added to the vessel.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1986Date of Patent: April 12, 1988Assignee: Advanced Tobacco ProductsInventors: Ronald G. Patent number: 4721119Abstract: A cigarette rod making machine wherein a garniture tape transports a web of cigarette paper and a stream of tobacco particles through a wrapping mechanism has a device which monitors the position of the tape in the wrapping mechanism and adjusts a pulley for the tape when the position of the tape relative to the adhesive applicator is unsatisfactory. The applicator delivers a film of adhesive against one marginal portion of the web on the tape before the web is converted into a tube which confines the particles of tobacco. The adjustments of the pulley are carried out with a view to move the tape sideways so as to maintain a predetermined part of the one marginal portion of the web in a position to receive the adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1986Date of Patent: January 26, 1988Assignee: Korber AGInventors: Dieter Ludszeweit, Jurgen Gomann
