  • Patent number: 7740573
Abstract: A dunnage conversion machine (115), wherein sheet stock material is crumpled to form a crumpled strip, includes a feeding assembly (132). The feeding assembly (132) includes opposed feeding members that engage and advance the crumpled strip therebetween. One of the feeding members (141) includes a rotating member (141) supported on a shaft (144) for rotation about the axis of the shaft, the shaft being mounted for transverse movement toward and away from the other feeding member (140) to accommodate variations of the thickness of the crumpled strip as it is advanced between the opposed feeding members (140 and 141). The conversion machine (115) also includes a guide member (200) positioned laterally adjacent to the rotating member (141) progressively to guide a portion of the crumpled strip underneath the shaft (144). The guide member (200) has at least a portion adjacent the shaft (144) that is transversely movable.

  • Patent number: 7614994
Abstract: An easy load packaging system, and a stand and a dunnage conversion machine therefor are disclosed. The stand includes a base and a pair of upright guide members mounted to the base and supporting at the upper ends thereof a dunnage conversion machine. The guide members define there between a channel for guiding sheet stock material to the dunnage conversion machine. The dunnage conversion machine is pivotable relative to the stand between an operating position and a servicing/loading position whereat access to internal components of the machine is simplified. A stack of sheet stock material is jacketed and/or baled for simplified loading into a packaging system or stand. An adhesive layer on the bottom or top of the stack enables the stack to be easily spliced to another stack.

  • Patent number: 7407471
Abstract: A tabletop converter has a conversion assembly that inwardly gathers and crumples a stock material to form a strip of dunnage. The conversion assembly includes a feeding assembly that moves the stock material and a controller that controls the feeding assembly to operate in both a forward direction and a reverse direction. To automatically separate a discrete dunnage product from the strip, a holder grabs and holds the strip of dunnage at a holding location downstream of the feeding assembly. The feeding assembly then operates in a reverse direction and urges the strip away from the holding location. This causes the strip to separate at or between the holding location and the feeding assembly, leaving a discrete dunnage product ready for use. The converter is mounted to a stand that allows the converter to rotate relative to part of the stand about both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis.

  • Patent number: 6428459
Abstract: A protective furniture shipment and storage bag is formed as an envelope comprised of inner and outer transparent film layers with protective cushioning foam elements sandwiched therebetween at opposite ends of the envelope to define a furniture viewing window longitudinally between the foam elements. Such bags are fabricated by sandwiching foam elements in spaced relation between two essentially coextensive transparent film layers, folding the sandwiched components along the longitudinal fold line, and heat sealing or otherwise attaching the folded film layers and foam elements at the opposite ends to form the aforedescribed envelope.

  • Patent number: 5532044
Abstract: Disclosed is a flat type pulp-molded cushioning material on which a number of raised portions are provided to serve as shock absorbers and a plurality of notches are provided at predetermined positions to allow said flat cushioning material to be folded along said notches to form a box-like means with a desired configuration corresponding to the shape of an article to be packed therein. The erected portions of the flat material can be suitably limited in place by the side walls of an outer packing container, which together with the fitly contact of the cushioning material with the packed article provide enhanced effect of cushioning. Moreover, the flat cushioning material can be molded more easily and can be more conveniently stored and transported at lower cost.

  • Patent number: 4883555
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing custom-sized foam braced packaging. The apparatus includes means for automatically adjusting the assembler to meet the particular needs of individual package sizes without the requirement for retooling being imposed. Rails are formed from foam and an outer wrap or covering which are then mitered to define a package shape. Packaging material is then adhered to the rail frame to complete the package.

  • Patent number: 4867736
Abstract: An apparatus for folding agricultural storage bags (20) includes a frame (22) having an annular pad (70) mounted about the lateral periphery thereof. Pivotally mounted within and extending outwardly from the frame above the annular pad (70) are a plurality of upper arms (110). A plurality of lower arms (126) are similarly mounted below the annular pad (70) and are positioned between the upper arms (110). Mounted within the frame (22) above the upper arms (110) is a platform (26) for supporting a quantity of flexible tubular material. Mounted to the frame above the platform (26) is an advancing mechanism (50). The upper and lower arms (110 and 126) are actuated alternately to form the length of flexible tubular material into a plurality of folds each extending parallel to the annular pad (70).

  • Patent number: 4444535
Abstract: Improved embodiments of a blank for a dunnage plug which fills gaps between cargo and a side wall of a vessel or vehicle in which the cargo or lading is transported include a single sheet, preferably of corrugated cardboard, having cuts or slits, slots, perforations and bends positioned thereon for allowing portions of the sheet to be folded into a plurality of channels which intersect perpendicularly and interlock in a plurality of half cross-lap-joints to provide an extremely inexpensive structure having a designated thickness and being capable of withstanding substantial loads in compression without failure. Since the improved dunnage plug blank of the invention is assembled and disassembled without separation of the sheet into more than one piece, there is no tendency for portions of the dunnage plug to become lost at any time. Further, if the dunnage plug is disassembled it folds back into a single flat sheet for efficient storage.
