  • Patent number: 5431985
Abstract: The present invention relates to a low-density material element for use as protective packaging. The material element consists of a multi-layered body of a corrugated material which is lined on one of its sides. Thus the neighboring corrugated layers lie adjacent one another with a common lining layer without interlocking with one another and without being compressed. The multi-layer body has an extension length (L, E) which is in a direction perpendicular to both the corrugation extension direction and the layering direction. The multi-layer body is characterized in that it is held together with a singly positioned fixation. This singly positioned fixation functions to allow neighboring corrugated layers to lie loosely adjacent one another without being compressed. Furthermore, the singly positioned fixation allows the corrugated layers to be slidable relative to one another in a direction perpendicular to the corrugation extension (S) on being bent in a plane towards the body material.

Abstract: A cushioning conversion machine for converting a sheet-like stock material, which may be viewed as having two edge sections and a central section, into a cushioning product is provided. The machine includes a conversion assembly for converting the sheet-like stock material into a cushioning product and a supply assembly which supplies the sheet-like stock material to the conversion assembly. The stock material is supplied to the conversion assembly in such a manner that its edge sections must travel in a longer path than the central section thereby creating edge-tension in the edge sections of the stock material. While a certain minimum conversion-tension is necessary in the edge sections of the stock material to properly convert the stock material into a cushioning product, a certain continuous tearing-tension, greater than the minimum conversion-tension, will cause a continuous tear in the stock material.

  • Patent number: 4493109
Abstract: A flexible bulk container assembled from a single length of material. The container comprises a base (5), first and second opposed side walls (6,7) each joined to the base and third and fourth opposed side walls each composed of two panel sections (8,9 and 10,11 respectively) joined along a vertical center seam, each third and fourth side wall being joined to the first and second side walls and to the base. Each side wall has two spaced parallel reinforcing bands (2,3) extending from the bottom to the top thereof, each band being extended above the top of the side wall into a connection section that connects with the closer reinforcing band of the adjacent side wall to form a lifting loop (12 to 14) over the respective corner of the container. Each connecting section is a continuous extension of the two reinforcing bands that it connects, so avoiding stitching of the lifting loops to the wall fabric.

  • Patent number: 4479243
Abstract: In the construction of a collapsible receptacle there is provided a length of fabric material and a length of webbing material formed from the same material as the length of fabric material. A plurality of lift loops formed from length of webbing material are positioned at spaced points along the length of fabric material with the lower ends of the lift loops located more than a predetermined distance above the lower edge of the material. After the lift loops are secured to the length of fabric material, the assembly is secured around the upper end of a collapsible receptacle body panel with the lift loops projecting above the upper edge of the panel. A line of stitching is used to at least partially secure the assembly to the body panel, with the line of stitching positioned at least the predetermined distance below the lowermost end of the lift loops.

  • Patent number: 4444535
Abstract: Improved embodiments of a blank for a dunnage plug which fills gaps between cargo and a side wall of a vessel or vehicle in which the cargo or lading is transported include a single sheet, preferably of corrugated cardboard, having cuts or slits, slots, perforations and bends positioned thereon for allowing portions of the sheet to be folded into a plurality of channels which intersect perpendicularly and interlock in a plurality of half cross-lap-joints to provide an extremely inexpensive structure having a designated thickness and being capable of withstanding substantial loads in compression without failure. Since the improved dunnage plug blank of the invention is assembled and disassembled without separation of the sheet into more than one piece, there is no tendency for portions of the dunnage plug to become lost at any time. Further, if the dunnage plug is disassembled it folds back into a single flat sheet for efficient storage.

  • Patent number: 4424051
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for manufacturing two-ply agricultural storage bags, two supplies (36, 38) of flexible tubular materials are positioned on opposite sides of feed wheels (26) mounted on a generally cylindrical frame structure (24). The inner material (36a) from the first supply (36) extends through the frame (24) and outwardly around the feed wheels (26). The outer material (38a) from the second supply (38) extends around the feedwheels (26) in surrounding engagement over the inner material (36a). Actuation of the feedwheels (26) effects simultaneous advancement of the materials (36a, 38a) around the frame (24) so that a bag can be collected at the lower end of the frame.

  • Patent number: 4237776
Abstract: A cushioning dunnage producing and handling mechanism which is of relatively compact nature utilizing a multiply roll of sheet-like stock material, such as paper. As the stock is pulled off the composite roll, the edges are rolled inwardly in a longitudinally convergent chute, into generally superimposed condition. Pusher means urges the sheet-like stock material laterally toward a confronting surface of the chute. Then the inwardly rolled stock is passed into a crumpler section where mechanism attach together the confronting portions of the rolled edges of the stock material generally centrally, in a direction lengthwise thereof, to retain the dunnage product in highly compressible, lightweight pad-like form. A transfer vehicle is adapted to coact with the dunnage producing mechanism for storing a preselected amount of the pad-like dunnage product on the vehicle, whereupon the vehicle can be moved to a location distant from the dunnage producing mechanism for use at the distant location.
