Patent number: 8834396Abstract: A heel supporting and protective boot for bed-ridden patients, comprising unitary exterior and interior body forms which contain fiber filling and an angled foam wedge. Sewn tube holes on both sides allow for insertion of medical tubing. The inner fabric of the boot is antibacterial and moisture absorbent, while the outer fabric is moisture repellant. Left and right “Y-straps” provide secure upper and lower fastening of the boot as it envelops the patient's foot and lower leg. Two “loop” straps and a T-stabilizer stabilize the boot and keep the foot at a 90 degree angle to help eliminate foot drop. An opening at the heel of the boot and a circular cutout in the foam wedge allow the heel to remain exposed to air, provide proper elevation, and enhance blood circulation. The device enhances the healing of existing ulcers and minimizes the occurrence of foot drop and new pressure points.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2011Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Inventor: Jeffrey W. Patent number: 6488031Abstract: In the healthcare field there are specific wounds generally referred to as “pressure ulcers” or “decubitus ulcers”. These wounds are generally caused by: direct constant pressure to body tissues; internal disease or disorders which surfaces on the skin; urine or fecal material constantly in contact with skin causing breakdown; lack of proper nutrition; or, a combination of all these factors. These wounds occur mostly on “bed-ridden patients” whose debilitation is such that they cannot react to their body's neurological signals for them to adjust their position. Most of these patients are prone and lay on standard mattresses. These “pressure ulcers” can occur in any area of the body but are predominantly found in the shoulders, coccyx, hip, legs, and heels. Actually, any “bony-prominence” is a candidate for breakdown if pressure is allowed to be against it constantly.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1995Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Inventor: Haskell Lee Sells, II

Patent number: 5803088Abstract: A heel cup for a medical examination table has a solid bottom, and a heel receiving area that comfortably cradles the patient's heel. The rear portion to receive the heel is spherically shaped so the patient's heel can rotate as required and maintain the comfort of the patient. The forward portion that receives the extending foot of the patient is cylindrically shaped so the patient's foot will have a comfortable supporting surface regardless of the angle of the foot in the heel cup. A stub shaft extends from the rear of the heel cup for mounting the heel cup on the examination table. The stub shaft is positioned so that, when the heel cup is fixed to the table, the heel cup will be oriented as a mirror image of the patient's acetabulum. Thus, the patient's leg can move freely, rotating in the acetabulum at one end, and the heel cup at the other.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1996Date of Patent: September 8, 1998Inventor: Linda Blackwell
