C. using a Brookfield RVT viscometer, Spindle No. 1, 10 r.p.m. The use of the specified weight ratio and CMC type permits significant increases in the solids content at which encapsulation can be carried out without increasing process viscosities to an unacceptable extent and/or giving rise to poor quality microcapsules. The process is particularly suitable for producing microcapsules for use in pressure-sensitive copying paper.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing microcapsules by microencapsulating hydrophobic oils, particularly with substances contained therein, in which the hydrophobic oil is mixed, accompanied by vigorous stirring, into an aqueous medium containing a dispersion-stabilizing compound. The resulting oil-in-water dispersion is acid adjusted, aminoplastic capsules are formed in the conventional manner and the aqueous fraction of the aqueous medium is removed in the usual way. The aqueous medium contains a water-soluble, cationic compound such that it forms a dispersion-stabilizing compound in interaction with the water-soluble, anionic, sulphonated melamine-formaldehyde precondensate. The microcapsules obtained according to this process can be obtained economically without agglomerate formation in the form of dry single capsules e.g. by spray drying the aqueous capsule dispersion obtained. The invention also permits the encapsulation of random substances in dissolved and/or finely dispersed form.

Bar codes are also transferrable with good scannability through forms packs containing three or more sheets.

    Abstract: A heat-sensitive recording material is disclosed. The material comprises a support having provided on the same surface thereof microcapsules containing a basic colorless dye and an organic solvent, and a developer capable of reacting with the basic colorless dye to develop a color, the capsule walls of said microcapsules being impermeable to either of the basic colorless dye and the developer at room temperature but becoming permeable to the colorless dye and/or the developer upon application of heat. The organic solvent is a compound containing at least two benzene rings in the molecule thereof with a total number of at least one hetero atom selected from nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen and phosphorus atoms, if any, being less than 1/10 a total number of carbon atoms of the organic solvent. The material is excellent in preservability before and after recording and is excellent in heat-developability.

    Abstract: Methods for preventing or reducing the likelihood of successful alteration of information printed on a document, wherein a detectable substance is released from ruptured microcapsules onto the document in image areas. The substance penetrates through the document to form a confirming image on the reverse surface. Another detectable substance of lesser penetrating ability simultaneously may be released onto the document in the image areas. Spreading of the first substance outside the boundaries of the image area created by the second substance may produce a halo effect around the image area. Documents as treated by the methods are disclosed, as well as articles comprising a document to be treated in contact with a sheet coated with the detectable substance. The first substance is microencapsulated, the second substance may or may not be microencapsulated.

    Abstract: A method for producing images utilizing photohardenable microcapsules and a reversal phenomenon is disclosed. The microcapsules contain a color former, a photopolymerizable or cross-linkable monomer and a photoinitiator. A substrate containing the microcapsules is image-wise exposed to a high intensity, short term exposure of actinic radiation to cause reversal in the exposed microcapsules. The substrate is then given an overall exposure to polymerize the microcapsules which had not completely reversed. The microcapsules are then ruptured in the presence of a developer material to produce a negative image. In addition the inventive method may be used to produce copies by a "direct-write" copying process.
