  • Patent number: 6432882
Abstract: Several methods and multiple apparatus are disclosed for atomizing or vaporizing chlorpropham or any other organic compound that is a solid at ambient temperature and pressure conditions, without the need for converting the compound to a liquid which must be contained and transported by the aerosol-generating apparatus. The method provides an air stream that can be nearly saturated with chlorpropham vapor and free of both combustion products and carrier solvents. The process includes the steps of forming minute particles of solid CIPC particles from a larger block or chunks of solid CIPC, and inducting the particles into an airstream wherein the particles are provided with sufficient thermal energy to convert them into an aerosol. The process may be implemented by abrading a block of solid CIPC with a wire brush, by shaving a block of solid CIPC with a blade, or by pulverizing chunks of solid CIPC to convert it to a powder.

  • Patent number: 6375999
Abstract: A sprout inhibitor for potatoes is introduced into a potato storage facility as a gas phase carried in an air stream. The liquid sprout inhibitor may be heated prior to injection into a flowing air stream or a large surface area of the liquid sprout inhibitor may be exposed to the air stream to induce evaporation of the inhibitor into a gaseous phase. Sprout inhibitors such as dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) and trimethylnaphthalene are especially suitable for introduction to potato storage sheds by thermal fogging or evaporative fogging. A method and composition to promote healing of freshly dug potatoes are further disclosed. Treatment of freshly dug potatoes with DMN either prior to or immediately after storage promotes rapid healing of cuts, abrasions and similar injuries to the potatoes. Stored potatoes first treated with DMN may be later advantageously treated with low levels of CIPC for effective sprout inhibition.

Abstract: A method of treating potatoes sequentially with chemically-different sprout inhibitors is disclosed. Sprouting of stored potatoes may be eliminated or minimized by a treatment with CIPC followed sometime later by a treatment with a substituted naphthalene such as 1,4-DMN. Also, an initial treatment with 1,4-DMN soon after the potatoes are harvested may be advantageous in addition to the later treatments with CIPC and 1,4-DMN.

Abstract: Compositions comprising a herbicide wherein it is desired that the compound not be retained by the plant foliage, and a repellant adjuvant, wherein the repellant modifies the surface properties of the composition so that retention of the composition on foliage of a cultivated plant is reduced are described. In particular, the herbicide composition comprises a repellant adjuvant that is an aqueous solution of an alkyltrialkoxysilane such as methyltrimethoxysilane and a water soluble silane coupling agent such as N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane or an aqueous solution of an organosiliconate such as sodium methyl siliconate. Methods are described for using these compositions to prevent weeds without injury to cultivated plants, which plants include crop plants, food plants, turfgrass, ornamental plants, and garden plants.
