Abstract: The invention is based on the preparation of an organic solution of preferably phosphonic acids and tetravalent metals salts, preferably of Zr, Ti, Sn and Ce, in organic solvents, which behaves as a solution of layered tetravalent metals salts, preferably phosphate-phosphonates, which are completely insoluble in the known solvents. This peculiarity allows an easy insertion of particles of the above compounds in the pores of porous membranes, in the matrices of those polymers, which are soluble in the same organic solvents, as well as in the membrane/electrode interfaces of fuel cells. The use of tetravalent metals salts, preferably zirconium phosphate-phosphonates, possessing high proton conductivity (in some cases higher than 10?1 S cm?1) allows the preparation of impregnated porous membranes and of nano-polymeric membranes combining good mechanical properties, and/or reduced permeability to gaseous species, with good proton conductivity.

Abstract: A lubricant in the form of a water or oil insoluble solvent in oil emulsion is described where a base (soluble or dispersible in said oil-insoluble solvent or water) is present in the dispersed phase. These lubricants are beneficial in various applications such as internal combustion engines where the oil needs enough basicity to neutralize any inorganic acids generated by sulfur present in the fuel.

Abstract: Hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic compositions and derivatives thereof useful as dispersant/viscosity improvers for lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Carboxylic compositions are derived from (A) a hydrocarbon polymer having Mn ranging from about 20,000 to about 500,000, and (B) an &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic compound prepared by reacting (1) an active methylene compound of the formula (I), and (2) a carbonyl compound of the general formula (H), wherein Ra is H or hydrocarbyl and Rb is a member of the group consisting of H, hydrocarbyl and (III), wherein each R′ is independently R or OR and each R is, independently, H or a hydrocarbyl group; and lower alkyl acetals, ketals, hemiacetals and hemiketals of the carbonyl compound (2).

Abstract: This invention relates to low volatility 5W20, 5W30, 10W40, 10W50, 15W40 or 15W50 multigrade oils for crankcase lubrication of gasoline and diesel engines, the oils comprising:a) basestock having an average basestock neutral number of not less than 105 for a 5W multigrade, not less than 145 for a 10W multigrade and not less than 200 for a 15W multigrade,b) a detergent inhibitor package including an ashless dispersant comprising an oil soluble polymeric hydrocarbon backbone having functional groups in which the hydrocarbon backbone is derived from an ethylene alpha-olefin (EAO) copolymer or alpha-olefin homo- or copolymer having an M.sub.n of from 500 to 7000, and preferably having >30% of terminal vinylidene unsaturation, andc) a viscosity modifier. These multigrade crankcase oils provide better volatility with reduced use or even without the need for expensive light neutral basestocks or non-conventional lubricant basestocks, while at the same time providing adequate control of sludge and varnish.
Abstract: This invention relates to compositions which are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels, and more particularly, to additives which are chlorine-free or contain only minor amounts of chlorine. More particularly, carboxylic compositions are described which are prepared by reacting a terpolymer derived from a mixture of monomers comprising ethylene, an alpha-olefin containing 3 to about 20 carbon atoms, and a non-conjugated polyene with an alpha,beta-monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof. These carboxylic compositions may be used in lubricating oil or fuel compositions or may be used to form carboxylic derivative compositions which are useful in lubricating oil and fuel compositions.
Abstract: The present invention provides a continuous process for producing an adducted derivatized EPM or EPDM oil solution, in which a grafted ethylene polymer is adducted with an antioxidant diamine for formation of an adduct during holding.
