Patent number: 6099589Abstract: In fabric laundry procedures, commercial and household laundry detergent compositions commonly contain an optical brightener composition. Brighteners adjust the optical properties of the fabric in such a way that the fabric appears to be white even after repeated washings. Often white fabrics can yellow during use. Common laundry detergents fail to have sufficient brightening capacity to brighten heavily soiled white cotton items used in household, commercial, institutional or fast-food food surface. A process for improving the whiteness of soiled white cotton, preferably terry cloth, items involves contacting the soiled white fabric item with a presoak containing an effective proportion of a fluorescent optical brightener composition, removing the item from the presoak and separating the presoak composition from the fabric item producing an extracted item.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1997Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Kay Chemical CompanyInventors: Eddie D. Patent number: 5853489Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for cleaning a cleaning object, comprising the steps of: placing water and organic substances containing a nonionic surfactant composition having a cloud point of not higher than 100.degree. C. in a ratio of not less than 30% by weight, with or without previous blending, in a cleaning vessel, wherein the organic substances have a specific gravity higher than that of water and, when mixed with water, placed in the cleaning vessel and kept standing at a temperature of from 20.degree. to 100.degree. C. for 30 minutes, exhibit phase separation such that not less than 50% by weight of the organic substances is separated into a lower layer; maintaining a temperature above the cloud point of the nonionic surfactant, thereby allowing water and the organic substances to be in the state of phase separation in which the concentration of the organic substances in a lower layer is higher than that in an upper layer; and cleaning the cleaning object in the lower layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1996Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Assignee: Kao CorporationInventor: Kozo Kitazawa
