The lifetime protection is achieved by binding at least one pesticide within a continuous or discontinuous polymer matrix layer thereby substantially reducing release of the pesticide from the matrix. The release rate of the pesticide from the matrix can be controlled by the use of a carrier such as carbon black. The release of the pesticide from the barrier can be further controlled by inclusion of additional layers which can make the barrier substantially non-releasing.
