Abstract: Phenoxycarboxylic acids of the formula ##STR1## wherein R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 R.sub.5, Z and n are as hereinafter set forth, are as described. The compounds of formula I are antagonists of slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A), which renders them useful as agents for the treatment of allergic conditions.

The compounds are useful for the treatment and prevention of injury to the brain and of edema due to head trauma, stroke (particularly ischemic), arrested breathing, cardiac arrest, Reye's syndrome, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral tumors, encephalomyelitis, spinal cord injury, hydrocephalus, post-operative brain injury trauma, edema due to cerebral infections and various brain concussions.

Abstract: A benzoic acid derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 stands for a lower alkyl group, R.sup.2 stands for an optionally protected carboxyl group and X stands for a halogen or a salt thereof, has excellent antiasthmatic and antiinflammatory activities and therefore is useful as an antiasthmatic or antiinflammatory agent for a mammalian animal.

Abstract: A method of treating a person for sickle cell anemia including administering to the person a therapeutically effective dosage of the compound ##STR1## wherein at least one R=Cl, BR, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3 and each other R=H, R'=H or CH.sub.3 and n=1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. The compound is preferably selected from the group consisting of clofibrate, clofibric acid, p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid and phenoxyacetic acid. It is preferably administered in solid dosage form and may advantageously be employed in prophylactic treatment to resist sickle cell crises.

Abstract: This invention relates to new chemical compounds which possess valuable therapeutic activity particularly as lipoxygenase inhibitors possessing antiflammatory and antiallergic properties. The present new compounds are of the formula: ##STR1## wherein, Z and Z.sub.1 each are alkylene chains containing up to three carbon atoms in the principal chain and a total of up to five carbon atoms and include from 0-1 double bonds;R is H or lower alkyl;R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are H, lower alkyl, OH, lower alkoxy, benzyloxy, carboxy, alkylenecarboxyl or alkylcarbonyl.R.sub.3 is H, lower alkyl, aralkyl or lower alkanoyl; andX is --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n --, --CH.dbd.CH--, --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --, --S(CH.sub.2).sub.n -- or ##STR2## n=0 or 1 n'=1 or 2.

Abstract: Polyene compounds represented by the general formulae ##STR1## in which: R and R.sub.1 are each hydrogen or an alkyl group of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms;R.sub.2 is an alkyl group of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms;R.sub.3 is hydroxyl, alkoxy of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, NH.sub.2, NHR.sub.2 or NR.sub.2 R.sub.2 and Z is a cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or cycloalkdienyl group substituted with from 0 to 5 alkyl groups, a keto group or a hydroxyl group or a phenyl group substituted with from 0 to 4 hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, aryloxy, aralkyloxy or trifluoromethyl groups or halogen atoms or combinations thereof and the pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof.The foregoing compounds have been found to be effective in the treatment of psoriasis, inflammatory conditions and allergic responses.

These retinoids are useful as chemopreventive agents for inhibiting tumor promotion in epithelial cells and for treating nonmalignant skin disorders.

Abstract: A composition having broad spectrum antimicrobial activity and being freeze and heat stable is comprised of a clear solution containing up to approximately 90% by weight of a eutectic mixture of three or more lower alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid such as isopropyl p-hydroxybenzoate, isobutyl p-hydroxybenzoate and n-butyl p-hydroxybenzoate in a ratio between approximately 1:1:1 to 4:2:2, respectively, approximately 10% to 90% by weight of a "Glydant" solution (composed of 55% 1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin and 45% water) and at least approximately 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the eutectic mixture and the "Glydant" solution of an anionic surfactant. The latter, for example, may be dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulfate or the ammonium or sodium salt of sulfated nonylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol.
