  • Patent number: 11959273
Abstract: The present invention relates to a damage-free engagement device for wind-resistance of base-isolated structures. It includes a rubber seismic isolation support, upper and lower connecting plates, and a wind-resistance stiffness adjuster. The adjuster comprises a horizontal sliding bearing plate, a vertical guide groove, and components within the guide groove. These components include a bird beak plate, a disc spring group, and a stiffness adjustment bolt. The bird beak plate slides along the guide groove and engages with the sliding bearing plate. The invention improves horizontal stiffness while maintaining seismic isolation. It achieves a “wind lock-seismic unlock-wind lock” mechanism without component replacement, reducing maintenance costs.

  • Patent number: 11619061
Abstract: A new passive control building arrangement is provided for improving the seismic response of structures. The proposed control arrangement was incorporated to a 1/20 scale model of a steel structure. The SAP2000 software program was used to develop an analytical model of the constructed scale model. After using a series of experimental data to calibrate the analytical model, valuable information of the dynamic properties of the arrangement was obtained. Different configurations with distinct parameters of the control arrangement were analyzed in the program to evaluate the variables that affect the dynamic properties of the model. It was determined that the geometric configuration of the arrangement and the spring stiffness value of a spring used in the arrangement affect considerably the dynamic properties. Simulated earthquake tests were performed in two proposed alternatives of the control arrangement to evaluate their effectiveness in improving the seismic response of the scale model.

Abstract: An enclosure for a nacelle of a wind turbine is connected to a substructure in a manner that allows the enclosure to move relative to the substructure. An imaginary straight line extends over the panel and is aligned with an edge of the panel. The imaginary straight line defines a first sub-portion of the panel, said first sub-portion comprising the edge. The first sub-portion butts against the substructure. The first sub-portion is retained against the substructure by a tension element acting in a direction of tension. The first sub-portion can be displaced relative to the substructure in a direction which intersects the direction of tension. The invention facilitates the operation of assembling the enclosure.

It comprises sliding bearings that are constructed with steel elements, elastomeric O-rings, and permanent magnets; contain a pressurized fluid; and slide over electricity-conducting metallic base plates. It also comprises permanent magnets disposed at the periphery of the metallic base plates. The pressurized fluid carries the bulk of the vertical load supported by each bearing, minimizing thus the magnitude of the frictional forces that resist the bearings' sliding. The motion of the permanent magnets in the sliding bearings over the electricity-conducting base plates generates damping forces that reduce the bearings' relative displacements to practical levels.

  • Patent number: 8371075
Abstract: For uncoupling a building structure from the ground a sliding pendulum bearing is suitable for the protection of building structures in the case of movements of the ground, due to earthquakes for example, or as an alternative for conventional deformation bearings. The bearing has a first sliding face with a first concave sliding face and a sliding shoe, which is in sliding contact with the first sliding face of the first sliding plate. A low friction material of a low-friction plastic is entrapped in the sliding shoe which has elastoplastic equilibrium properties. In particular as a low friction material a ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is utilized. After a displacement entailed by an external force the sliding shoe returns of its own accord into a stable equilibrium position.

  • Patent number: 8307585
Abstract: The invention is a damper and a method for protecting buildings and similar structural systems from dynamic loading such as loading caused by earthquakes, strong winds or machine vibrations. More specifically, the damper is made from structural members being interconnected in frictional or visco-elastically dampened rotational joints. Due to the dampening of the joints, relative movement between the structural elements is dampened. In particular, the damper is useful for base isolation, e.g., in order to allow a building or a machine to move in a dampened movement relative to its foundation or in order to allow a cable stay of a cable stay bridge to move in a dampened movement relative to its fixation point on the bridge.

  • Publication number: 20120174500
Abstract: The system described herein consists of a seismic isolator and a damping device. The system is used to isolate structures from seismic forces and further reduces transmitted forces via the seismic isolator to structure. The isolator has a spherical base fixed to ground, middle part that responds to the moving base by rotating around the centre of a small concave or convex, causing the superstructure to move upwards and downwards vertically, and a top part connected to the superstructure and the isolator middle part. The damping device consists of horizontal seismic force filter, springs, dampers and a vertical force transferor beam. Structures seismically isolated with the system herein may be protected to adequate amounts that allow minimal or no damages to the superstructures. That means continuous serviceability during and aftermath becomes achievable for the very most of the earthquakes and site characteristics combinations.

  • Patent number: 8215068
Abstract: According to one embodiment, the energy dissipation of a structural element is increased by inserting one or more resisting elements into the structural element at any time during or after construction of the structural element. The continuous resisting elements are rigidly attached to the structural at one end and connected to the structural element by and through a damping material over at least a portion of its length. When a dynamic force is applied to the structural elements, such as may result from wind or earthquakes, there will be a strain in the structure, in a direction parallel with the longitudinal direction of the resisting elements. In this way, the forces and deformations within the structure will result in a relative motion between the structural element and resisting element, a substantial portion of which is ultimately transmitted by and through the damping material layer.

Abstract: Construction and advantages of improved wavy composite structures made from wavy composite, unidirectional composites, and damping materials is revealed. By combining wavy composite laminae in various waveforms, offsets, angular orientations and material combinations, it is possible to provide axial, torsion, or shear properties equivalent to unidirectional materials but without the limitations related to fiber discontinuity, labor costs for fabrication, and weakness at seams where laminates overlap. By combining wavy composite layers with unidirectional crossplies, or by using woven mats with various fill fiber levels where the warp fibers are sinuously arranged, improved strength and damping is possible. Several examples of both wavy crossply laminates and unidirectional crossply laminates are analyzed and compared.
