  • Patent number: 8302359
Abstract: An improved joint edge assembly, of the type used in the construction of concrete slabs, is disclosed. The assembly comprises a longitudinal joint rail, preferably of steel, which is supported off the ground by formwork. The joint rail comprises first and second joint edge members that are connected to each other by interference-type connectors with self-release elements. A plurality of studs extends downward and outward from each of the joint edge members into the concrete slabs provide a positive mechanical connection between the slab and the joint rail. As the concrete shrinks during hardening, the self-release elements of the interference-type connectors allow the joint to freely open. The joint edge assembly thus provides a self-releasing joint between adjacent slab sections, and protects the edges of the adjacent slab sections from damage. A dowel aligner may also be integrated into the assembly, to allow proper positioning of dowels within the slab.

  • Patent number: 5921038
Abstract: Water is prevented from entering the wall interior of a building from in and around a wall component, such as a window, mounted in the building wall, by positioning a diverter directly beneath the wall component. The diverter includes an upper surface that slopes toward the wall exterior, a plurality of spaced, parallel ribs extending upwardly from the upper surface and beyond the exterior wall to form a plurality of downwardly sloping channels, a cover over the outer ends of the ribs to form drainage openings at the ends of the channels. A downwardly extending non-linear pathway from the drainage openings to the exterior of the diverter prevents water from entering the wall interior through the channels.

  • Patent number: 5619831
Abstract: A method of forming a joint (2) and the member (8, 28) used therein between two cementitious faces (3, 4) in which the space between the faces is not of uniform cross-section, but has at least two different widths (5, 6) and is stepped with a shoulder (7). The joint member has a central upright portion (9), a lower portion or head (10) for positioning the member relative to the lower faces (5). The lower portion includes one or more sets of projections (14) which are resiliently deformable. Flanges 11 on either side of the central portion have limited movement relative to the central portion rest on the shoulder (7) of the faces when the space between the member and the faces 3, 4 is filled with a resilient but compressible product.

  • Patent number: 5537790
Abstract: A seismic bridge for bridging and providing pedestrian access across a seismic joint between two building parts has a first end unit with a floor pivotally connected to one of the building parts and a second end unit with a floor pivotally connected to the other building part. A corridor sleeve unit, also having a floor, is slidably connected to each of the first and second end units. During relative motion between the two building parts, such as during an earthquake, the bridge can accommodate relative motion between the building parts within a predefined range, while still maintaining the structural integrity of the bridge. The bridge also includes centering means for centering and properly positioning the corridor sleeve unit with respect to the first and second end units. The centering means uses springs in combination with a plurality of frames which are slidably connected to each other to maintain the appropriate distance between the end units and the corridor sleeve unit.

  • Patent number: 5384995
Abstract: A motor vehicle glazing (1) prepared for installation according to the adhesive process is provided with a profiled spacer (8) produced by extrusion of an extrudable polymer directly onto glazing (1) and subsequent setting. During installation of glazing (1) in the window opening of the motor vehicle body, profiled spacer (8) acts as an intermediate member between glazing (1) and assembly adhesive extrudate (13). Profiled spacer (8) is provided along its outer periphery with a lip portion (10) projecting beyond peripheral area (3) of glazing (1). In the installed position of glazing (1), lip portion (10) rest against the window frame flange (4) running parallel to peripheral area (3) of glazing (1) and acts, upon insertion of the glazing during the setting process of assembly adhesive (13), as a support and centering element for glazing (1).

  • Patent number: 5121575
Abstract: This invention provides various configurations of spacers for use in plastic block constructions to prevent relative lateral side-to-side movement between adjacent blocks of the construction when they are connected together with interlockable tab extensions. The spacers are mounted within joint spaces between adjacent blocks of the construction and are in contacting operative engagement with the interlocked tabs to prohibit any relative lateral movement out of alignment between the blocks in the direction towards or away from the frontal or rearward planar faces of the blocks and to retain the blocks aligned in a common plane.

  • Patent number: 5088258
Abstract: An improved insulating spacer assembly for reducing heat transfer between panes of an insulated glazing unit comprises an extruded or roll-formed hollow metal spacer together with thermal breaks and primary sealant. The spacer and thermal breaks are preferably coextruded together, with the thermal breaks being extruded along the upper third portion of the spacer sidewalls, lengthwise along the spacer sidewall. The primary sealant is extruded along the middle third of the spacer sidewalls, parallel to and in cohering relationship to the thermal breaks. The invention also provides insulated glazing units wherein the spacer assembly is sandwiched between two glass panes to provide an exterior channel which is filled with a secondary sealant composition which also covers the exposed edges of the glass panes.

  • Patent number: 4608802
Abstract: A spacer for use between the panes of a multiple-pane window has two tubular components whose end faces are spaced apart from one another by two relatively small teeth of an elongated plug one half of which extends into one tubular component and the other half of which extends into the other tubular component. The plug has recesses which receive portions of the respective tubular components to hold the plug against extraction from the tubular components as well as to urge some of an adhesive sealing compound at the exterior of each half of the plug toward and into the gap between the two end faces. Such gap is only partially filled by the teeth and receives sealing compound from a depression in the external surface of the plug in response to deformation of adjacent end portions of the tubular components so that the gap is filled or practically filled with sealing compound in automatic response to proper attachment of the plug to the two tubular components.

  • Patent number: 4333295
Abstract: An interconnecting spacer is interposed between a pair of channel members, each having a central portion and substantially normally extending flanges. The spacer is H-shaped in cross section, having a central cross-bar and a pair of lateral side walls. The ends of the side walls and flanges of the channel members have cooperative engagement means. A plug is inserted within the cavities formed by the spacer and the channel members having a dimension such that the engagement means are placed under stress to lock the same.

  • Patent number: 4295315
Abstract: An expansion joint cover comprises a pair of elongated rigid frame members, each of which includes a generally vertical, longitudinally continuous wall portion and a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced-apart, substantially horizontal plate-like tongues supported in cantilevered relation from the vertical wall portion at locations spaced from the upper edge of the wall portion and in longitudinal alignment. The longitudinal spacings between adjacent tongues of each frame member are not less than the widths of the tongues of the other frame member such that in the cover as installed in the expansion gap the tongues of each frame member project into the spaces between the tongues of the other frame member, and a generally longitudinally continuous bridge is formed by an intervening of the tongues of each of the frame members between the tongues of the other.
