  • Patent number: 8307602
Abstract: An energy saving grate installed outside a building or structure in warm weather that reduces heating due to infrared radiation (IR) from sunlight. For a window application the grate acts as a sunshade to block or diffuse the IR and ultraviolet (UV) portions of sunlight while passing visible light. The grate cell size, depth, cell surface characteristics, and mounting details near the sash determine system performance of sunlight control, of the view through the grate, and of the exterior appearance. The grate is removable for cool weather. The grate system can cool various surfaces and requires no operating adjustments. It can be applied near most windows (including skylights) on all sides of a building where impinging sunlight causes unwanted heating. Compared to external solar thin mesh screens the grate system can provide more open area for a given performance in reduced IR heating.

  • Patent number: 6230456
Abstract: A one-piece window insert fastener for releasably securing a window insert to a window sash having a generally rectangular shape with a plurality of openings about its periphery, the insert having a generally rectangular-shaped frame with a single pane structure fixed therein and having a plurality of bars each having a terminal end portion and each terminal end portion having a channel therein, the fastener being elongate and having a longitudinal axis, the fastener consisting of: a head portion adapted to engage the window sash and removably insertable into one of the openings in the window sash; a tail portion adapted to fixedly engage the window insert and removably insertable into one of the channels in the window insert; and a compression portion between the head portion and tail portion, the compression portion biasing the head portion against the window sash and allowing movement of the head portion toward the tail portion when the window insert is inserted in the window sash and moving the head porti

  • Patent number: 6192640
Abstract: A double divisible connector frame for use as a support member for mounting return grilles and louvers in a building structure which is rectangular in shape and having a planar surface on one side and a pair of precisely-similar spaced-apart continuous rectangular flanged frames on the other side, and a lineal line of severance equidistant between said smaller flanged frames for dividing said double frame into a pair of similar smaller frames for mounting said grilles and louvers.

  • Patent number: 6170216
Abstract: A grid structure capable of withstanding a compressive force comprises a peripheral frame, a plurality of first grid members connected to and extending within the peripheral frame and a plurality of second grid members connected to and extending within the peripheral frame. The second grid members intersect the first grid members. The first and second grid members form a grid of small frames disposed within the peripheral frame. The grid has an upper surface and a lower surface wherein a first group of at least a portion of at least one of the first and second grid members have flanges on the upper surface, the flanges being generally perpendicular to the first and second grid members and a second group of at least a portion of at least one of the first and second grid members have flanges on the lower surface, the flanges being generally perpendicular to the first and second grid members. A process of making the grid structure is also disclosed, as is an assembly of such grid structures.

  • Patent number: RE40217
Abstract: A fastener system for securing a grating to an underlying structural support member when the grating experiences extremely high wave pressures. The fastening system includes elongated generally L-shaped connectors for fastening the longitudinal edges of grating sheets to structural members and plate fasteners in a wave zone area of the platform. The plate fasteners have a top plate for mounting on an upper surface of the grating sheets, a bottom plate for attaching to the structural members in a laterally extending direction for supporting the grating sheet and bolt assemblies for clamping the top and bottom plates together in order to secure the grating sheets to the structural members. A combination of the elongated L-shaped connectors and the plate fasteners provide fastening support for the gratings sheets so as to resist vertical and horizontal wave pressures when secured to the supporting members.
