  • Patent number: 6260325
Abstract: A suspended ceiling system in which the grid runners are largely concealed by the panels to produce a distinctive high quality appearance. In various illustrated embodiments, the visual effect is produced as a result of the panels being separated by a relatively narrow gap in two perpendicular directions or by a narrow gap in one direction and essentially no gap in the perpendicular direction, and the grid being recessed above the main face of the panels. The panels are accurately positioned on the grid by metal clips, normally permanently attached to the panels, which engage upstanding flange portions of the grid runners. The accurate positioning afforded by the clips assures that visually distracting variations in the size of the narrow gaps are avoided. The clips can also serve to avoid accidental dislodging of the panels.

Abstract: A panel assembly includes a resiliently deflectable panel and a plurality of retainer clips. The panel includes a relatively thick rectangular base section and a relatively thin rectangular lip section which extends outwardly from the periphery of the base section. The retainer clips are connected with the base section and cooperate with the lip section of the panel to engage a support structure to hold the panel in place. To mount the panel in the support structure, the panel is resiliently flexed. The panel is then released and its natural resilience causes a retainer clip to engage the support structure to hold the panel against movement relative to the support structure. A disengagement tool may advantageously be inserted between the panel and the support structure to apply force against the retainer clip and to resiliently flex the panel to disengage the retainer clip from the support structure.

The narrow flanges provide improved aesthetics and reduce the material required to form the grid tees when compared to conventional wide-faced grid tees. The panel supporting flanges are sufficiently narrow that if the grid were used with conventional panels having a conventional amount of clearance, they would not reliably support the panels in the grid. However, when the centering means are provided to center the panels within the panel receiving openings, reliable support is provided for the panels.

  • Patent number: 4648229
Abstract: A suspended ceiling system having tiles and fixtures with interspersed hooks resting on runners. The hooks from adjacent ceiling components rest on the top of the same runners, but not upon each other. Each tile, consequently, may undergo removal without interfering or disturbing any of its neighbors. The tiles may have kerfing and backcutting with a metal bracket, or spline, inserted in the kerfing. The hooks extend from the metal bracket upwards and over the top of the suspended runners. Generally, the location of the hooks and spaces form mirror images of each other through a plane passing through the middle of the tile. When used on the opposite side for a neighboring tile, the hooks from either tile land in the space between the hooks on the other tile. Although resting on top of the same runner, they do not lie on top of each other, permitting the removal of one tile without disturbing any others.
