Abstract: This invention relates to a method of producing silicone elastomeric foam of low density. The method mixes polydiorganosiloxanes having hydroxyl endblocking or vinyl endblocking or mixtures of both along with water to react with silicon hydride in the presence of platinum catalyst to release hydrogen gas to create a froth which cures to a foam. The combination of ingredients allows the manufacture of silicone foam having different combinations of properties than those obtained from previous methods. Embodiments of the invention also make use of specific profoamers and specific alcohols to further modify the properties of the foams produced. The method of this invention yields a low cost, low density, silicone elastomeric foam having physical properties which enable it to be used in cushioning and sealing applications.
Abstract: Intumescent coatings which form a thick, uniform, fine celled, low density foam upon exposure to a high intensity heat flux or flame are disclosed, the invention coatings comprise phenolic resin prepolymer containing a blowing agent and a nucleating agent; in the preferred embodiments the coatings also contains a silicone surfactant, the coatings are useful in thermal and fire protection systems.
Abstract: The present invention concerns a foamed, silane-cross-linked polyolefin foam and a procedure for producing the same. The polyolefin foam contains 60-99.9% polyolefin, 0.1-10% chemically bound hydrolyzed silane, 0-5% condensing catalyst, 0.1-5% water and 0-20% water carrier substance. The polyolefin foam is produced by extruding a mixture which contans polyethylene, silane hydrolyzable with water, a condensing catalyst and a foaming agent. For the polyolefin to be extruded is used polyethylene containing 0.1-5% water as foaming agent and 0-20% water carrier substance.
Abstract: This invention describes a method of producing a silicone elastomer from an emulsion. When the ingredients are mixed together, the resulting latex can be used immediately. Removing the water from the latex results in a silicone elastomer. The method combines (A) an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, present as an emulsion of dispersed particles in water, the emulsion having a pH of greater than 9, (B) dialkyltindicarboxylate, (C) alkylorthosilicate, (D) colloidal silica, and optionally (E) water, admixing (A) and (B) only in the presence of (C) to produce a dispersion of the ingredients in water. The ingredients can be distributed into a two-part system for storage. One embodiment includes fibers, lauryl alcohol, or a mixture of both in the emulsion; then forms an open-cell, elastomeric foam by forming a froth from the emulsion and removing the water from the froth.
Abstract: The invention relates to a plastics cellular material comprising the reaction product of an unsaturated polyester resin containing a polymerizable unsaturated monomer and an epoxy-based vinyl ester in the presence of surfactants.
Abstract: A foamable thermoplastic composition comprising in admixture (a) a polycarbonate resin, alone, or with (b) a polyester resin, (c) a minor amount of a foaming agent and (d) a minor amount of a non-fibrous particulate agent comprising an organic polymeric material to nucleate the foam. The composition also contains a surface active agent compound, such as a silicone, a polyglycol ether, a fatty acid derivative or a mixture thereof, to enhance particulate dispersion and to reduce the surface tension.
Abstract: Polyorganosiloxane foams exhibiting a desirable combination of low density, an average cell size between 0.2 and 4 mm and a cell concentration of at least 4 per linear centimeter are obtained by dispensing and curing moisture curable organosiloxane compositions containing a dispersed liquid or gaseous blowing agent and, as a foam stabilizer, a resinous organosiloxane copolymer comprising trimethylsiloxy units, SiO.sub.4/2 units and fluorine-containing organosiloxane units. The polymer portion of the organosiloxane compositions can be a polydimethylsiloxane or a graft copolymer comprising at least 20 mole percent of dimethylsiloxane units in combination with organic units.
Abstract: The invention provides a novel silicone-containing curable composition capable of foaming by virtue of the blowing agent contained therein together with a curable liquid silicone composition. The composition is suitable for the water-repellent and waterproof treatment of fabric materials without decreasing the air and moisture permeability of the treated fabric material.
Abstract: A foamable ink composition which comprises a water-based printing ink, a foaming agent and a pseudoplastic additive. The ink, foaming agent and pseudoplastic additive are foamed with a compressed gas. The pseudoplastic additive aids in the mixing of the ink with the gas and enhances the stability of the foam. The foam is especially adapted for application to a gravure cylinder where it is doctored to convert the foam bubbles into thin discrete membranes spanning the gravure cells. These membranes then are transferred, either directly or indirectly to a moving web.
Abstract: This invention relates to a plastics cellular material and to a process for production of a plastics cellular material. The plastics cellular material has a resin binder and is characterized by the inclusion of products of the reaction of polyester resins and epoxy-based vinyl esters in the presence of surfactants. The process includes taking a first mixture of an unsaturated fast curing polyester resin, epoxy-based vinyl esters, copolymerizeable monomers, a finely dispersed gas releasing salt, hardening accelerators, finely dispersed surfactants, and fillers. The process also includes taking a second mixture is mixed that includes an acidic solution, for reaction with the gas releasing salt as a blowing agent, and organic catalysts. The two mixtures are combined to form a third mixture that will foam in a controllable manner and cure to produce a foam material.
Abstract: Tufted or woven article having a unitary backing is prepared by applying to the underside of a tufted or woven textile article, a polyurethane-forming composition comprising(A) a relatively high molecular weight polyether polyol;(B) a relatively low molecular weight polyol;(C) an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate;(D) an inorganic filler component. The present invention describes a carpet comprising (I) a primary backing; (II) a yarn tufted or woven through said primary backing thereby creating a yarn bundle on the underside of the resultant tufted or woven textile article and (III) a polyurethane composition applied to the underside thereby encapsulating the yarn bundles and adhering the yarn bundles to the primary backing; said polyurethane composition comprising the catalyzed reaction product of the composition described above.

Abstract: Organic ethers including polyethers having two CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(R)CH.sub.2 -- end groups per molecule wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group are reacted with organohydrosiloxanes under hydrosilation reaction conditions in the presence of a platinum catalyst preferably a neutral platinum catalyst, to form very useful nonhydrolyzable siloxane block copolymers. Novel nonhydrolyzable linear block copolymers substantially free of silicon-bonded hydrogen are obtained with linear dihydropolyorganosiloxane reactants and linear ethers or polyethers. The linear block copolymers made with the linear dihydrosiloxanes and polyethers are particularly useful as surfactants and foam stabilizers for the preparation of polyurethane foams. The very low degree (if any) of isomerization of the CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(R)CH.sub.2 -- group to unreactive species during the hydrosilation reaction results in the unexpectedly high molecular weight of the copolymers of the present invention.
