Patent number: 5506293Abstract: An isotropic resin matrix material includes resin doped with fiberballs. Fiberballs are formed from a plurality of fibers generally radiating outward from a common node. These fibers are of sufficient numbers and separation at a distal end to form a spherical shape. The fiberballs are uniformly distributed throughout the resin. Preferably, the fibers making up the fiberballs are carbon fibers. The carbon fibers impart thermal and electrical conductivity, or dielectric loss characteristics in some configurations. These conductivity and loss characteristics are isotropic in they are the same no matter where the electrical or thermal energy is applied due to the radial structure and uniform distribution of the fiberballs. The fiberballs may also be saturated with a phase change material and encapsulated in a shell so as to impart a heat dissipation capacity to the resin matrix material.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1994Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Northrop Grumman CorporationInventors: Thomas E. Patent number: 5506280Abstract: A modeling dough comprising gelled poly(vinyl alcohol), water and a filler provides a dough resistant to flaking, cracking, and crumbling. In the disclosed invention, the poly(vinyl alcohol) resin is gelled, thereby providing a water-based resin system that is not sticky yet very ductile. Prior to drying, the dough also exhibits the properties of bounceability and the ability to pick up newsprint. After the dough is air-dried, the poly resin serves to bind the components into a solid, durable product. The filler accounts for a large portion of the volume of the dough, so the overall volume is not greatly affected by water loss upon drying. The dough is water-based and easy to wash from skin, carpets, and other surfaces. Dyes and pigments can be easily incorporated into the formula. The dried product is sandable and paintable.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1994Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Binney & Smith Inc.Inventors: Richard E. Miller, Karen Mariano

Patent number: 5500458Abstract: A process is provided for stabilizing thermoplastic particles with organic phosphite particles. The process involves applying a liquid, relatively low molecular weight, phosphite to the surface of thermoplastic particles. The particles exhibit hydrolysis compared to conventional phosphite shell/polymeric core structures. The particles may be molded into useful thermoplastic articles.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1994Date of Patent: March 19, 1996Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: James A. Mahood

Patent number: 5476882Abstract: Light-stabilized polymer microparticles, which contain at least one light stabilizer, and processes for the preparation of these microparticles by polymerization of suitable monomers, at least a part of the polymerization being carried out in the presence of at least one light stabilizer, are described. The polymer microparticles can be used in coating compositions which comprise a disperse phase containing these particles and a liquid continuous phase.Coatings and finishes based on the compositions according to the invention are distinguished by improved weathering resistance, in particular by a high light stability.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1993Date of Patent: December 19, 1995Assignee: Ciba-Geigy CorporationInventors: Godwin Berner, Manfred Rembold, Jean Rody, Mario Slongo

Patent number: 5455289Abstract: Disclosed is a process for adding stabilizers and, optionally, additives to polyolefins in particle form obtained in liquid monomer by means of Ziegler-Natta catalysts, where the addition of stabilizers and, optionally, additives is carried out in liquid monomer in a step that follows polymerization, but precedes the flashing of the liquid monomer, after the aluminum alkyl has been deactivated.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1995Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Montell North America Inc.Inventor: Giancarlo Caselli

Patent number: 5432223Abstract: A novel high-performance binder system is provided for the fabrication of segregation-free iron based powder blends. The blends are prepared by using a binder system comprising thermoplastic resin polyvinylpyrrolidone and a suitable compatible plasticizer such as polyethylene glycol, and optional solid lubricants. The binder system enables the manufacture of segregation-free iron-based powder blends with high flow rate and compressibility, enhanced apparent density, green strength and transverse rupture strength, and low dimensional variations compared to unbonded powder blends and to blends made with PVP or PEG only as the binder.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1994Date of Patent: July 11, 1995Assignee: National Research Council of CanadaInventors: Blaise Champagne, Kenneth Cole, Sylvain Pelletier

Patent number: 5407741Abstract: An exothermic conductive coating comprises carbon particles, a substantial portion being spherical particles having a diameter of not more than 500 .mu.m, and a synthetic resin. A conductive heating unit is obtained by coating or impregnating a desirably-shaped solid or solid surface with the coating and curing it. The heating unit provides a uniform temperature distribution at any selected temperature up to about 450.degree. C., and can be formed in various shapes.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1993Date of Patent: April 18, 1995Assignee: Takashi OtaInventor: Takashi Ota
