    Abstract: What is disclosed are polyolefin compounds, e.g., polyethylene and polypropylene, and articles therefrom made in by conventional solid, melt-phase compounding with oxidized, non-cationized, non-silylated sulfur black pigment, a phenolic antioxidant and a sulfur-containing secondary stabilizer, each in stabilizing amount, specified below, which provide a synergistic improvement in the long term heat aging of polyolefins. Preferably the sulfur black compound is treated by washing, and reduction in the soluble sodium salts. Also disclosed is melt-phase compounded polyolefin and molded articles made therefrom comprising incorporating of carbon black, oxidized, non-cationized, non-silylated sulfur black pigment, a phenolic antioxidant and sulfur-containing secondary stabilizer.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a new and improved flame retarded polyolefin composition that displays good retained physical properties upon aging. The composition also exhibits excellent moldability and it may be easily colored. In a preferred embodiment the composition includes a polyolefin, a halogen-containing flame retardant additive, from at least about 1.00% by weight to about 2.5% by weight of a stabilizer package, and from about 0% to about 1.0% by weight of an acid/halogen scavenger. The stabilizer package includes by weight from about 20% to about 80% of a hindered phenolic antioxidant, from about 20% to about 80% of a phosphite containing antioxidant, and from about 0% to about 40% of a thio-ester antioxidant. In addition to displaying excellent color and physical property development and retention characteristics, the composition of the present invention displays an improved UL94 vertical burn rating.

The composition is applied to a solar cell then cured. The cured product contains a minimal concentration of curing-generated chromophores and resists UV-induced degradation.

    Abstract: A stabilizer formulation particularly well suited for improving the properties of thermoplastic polymers is disclosed. The stabilizer formulation contains a combination of stabilizers that improves the process stability of a polymer, prevents the polymer from yellowing, increases the thermal aging stability of the polymer and inhibits the polymer from generating smoke during melt processing. Of particular advantage, the stabilizer formulation improves the stability of a polymer without significantly adversely affecting any other properties of the polymer. In one embodiment, the stabilizer formulation includes a hindered amine, a hydroxyl amine, and one or more hydrolytically resistant phosphites. In one embodiment, the formulation can further contain an acid scavenger for preventing an acid contained within the polymer or produced during processing from harming the polymer.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a radiation curable composition which includes: (a) an unsaturated ester compound, and (b) a pulverizable vinyl ether compound. The unsaturated ester compound is characterized as having a plurality of unsaturated ester groups per molecule. The pulverizable vinyl ether compound is characterized as including at least one of the following: (a) a compound having an average of greater than 1.0 reactive vinyl ether groups per molecule, and (b) a vinyl ether-containing group bonded to the unsaturated ester compound such that there is an average of at least 1.0 reactive vinyl ether group per molecule. The unsaturated ester compound, the vinyl ether compound and/or a mixture thereof is treated with a reducing agent so as to decompose destabilizing agents present therein that would initiate premature polymerization of the vinyl ether compound.

    Abstract: The present invention provides polyhexamethylene adipamide fibers significantly excellent in thermal yellowing resistance, and a process for producing the same. The improved polyhexamethylene adipamide fibers can be obtained by either (1) melt spinning a polyhexamethylene adipamide simultaneously containing 2,4-bis(alkylthio)-6-(3,5 -dialkyl-4-hydroxyanilino)-1,3,5-triazine and a compound selected from the group consisting of phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid and derivatives of these acids, or (2) melt spinning the fibers having the sum of an amino end group concentration (?--NH.sub.2)!) and a carboxyl end group concentration (?--COOH!) of 70 to 200 meq/kg, satisfying the condition: ?--COOH!.ltoreq.60 meq/kg, and containing from 0.005 to 0.

    Abstract: Melt-blown microfiber webs are prepared from polyarylene sulfide polymers, particularly polyphenylene sulfide. A small amount of a phosphite or phosphonite compound is added to the extruder feedstock. The additive essentially eliminates spurious polymer particle formation at the extruder die openings, even over sustained production periods. The polyarylene sulfide microfiber webs so produced are thus essentially free of spurious particulates, and the web defects which may be caused by such particulates.
