Abstract: The present invention relates to powdered sulfonated thermoplastic polymers which function as viscosification agents when added to oil-based drilling muds which are the fluids used to maintain pressure, cool drill bits and lift cuttings from the holes in the drilling operation for oil and gas wells. The powdered sulfonated thermoplastic polymer has about 5 to about 100 meq. of sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the sulfonated thermoplastic polymer, wherein the sulfonated groups are neutralized with a metallic cation or an amine or ammonium counterion. The powdered sulfonated thermoplastic polymers have a particle size range of 0.25 .mu.m to 2.5 .mu.m and are prepared by spray drying an emulsion of the sulfonated thermoplastic polymer which has been prepared by a free radical copolymerization process.

Abstract: Additives for rubber compositions, giving vulcanisates having improved retention of optimum physical properties, are compounds containing two or more groups of the formula --S--SO.sub.2 R linked by an organic bridging group, or polymers containing two or more groups of the formula --S--SO.sub.2 R attached to an organic polymer chain, where R represents (a) a radical OM where M is a monovalent metal, the equivalent of a multivalent metal, a monovalent ion derived by the addition of a proton to a nitrogenous base, or the equivalent of a multivalent ion derived by the addition of two or more protons to a nitrogenous base, or (b) an organic radical selected from aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic radicals, and radicals which are combinations of any two or more such radicals.

Abstract: Polyphenylene ether resins having improved properties are described. These resins contain minor effective amounts of an antistatic agent comprising N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-octyl-N-methyl ammonium para toluene sulfonate salt, preferably with polyethylene glycol ester also present. In addition to serving as an enhancer for the antistatic agent, the polyethylene glycol ester also improves such properties as odor and impact strength.
Abstract: Described herein are flame retardant molding compositions comprising a blend of a polyarylate derived from a dihydric phenol and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a flame retardant additive which is a metal salt of an aromatic sulfonic acid. The composition may additionally contain one or more thermoplastic polymers.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of electrically conductive polyaromatics having conductivities greater than 10.sup.-2 S/cm, wherein from 0.5 to 15% by weight of an oxidizing Lewis acid, e.g. antimony pentafluoride or arsenic pentafluoride, or their NO.sup.+ - or NO.sub.2.sup.+ -salts, or a nitroaromatic, e.g. trinitrophenol or trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid, and/or a fluorine derivative, e.g. CF.sub.3 --COOH, or an acid, e.g. sulfuric acid, nitric acid or perchloric acid, is added to a polyaromatic, in the absence of moisture.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for coloring linear polyesters in the melt. The process comprises the use of 1-hydroxy-4-phenylaminoanthraquinones of the formula ##STR1## wherein one X is a hydrogen atom and the other is an alkylsulfonyloxy or chloroalkylsulfoxy group and Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group. The violet shades obtained are distinguished by excellent color strength and purity and also by good fastness properties.

Abstract: A composition for coating a substrate for use in an image wise developable or transferal system comprises (I) a free base of a cationic solvent dye capable of developing a color or at least a more intense color upon reaction with an organic acid developing compound and (II) a binder which is a wax or resin which does not develop said free base and which has been mixed with said free base in the presence of a non developing substantially non-polar solvent. Various forms of coating including the color developer composition in a layer or particulate form are applicable to different end uses.
Abstract: A melt-adhesive traffic paint composition having improved low temperature stability is disclosed which comprises 20-35% by weight of a dimer acid-modified polyamide resin, 1-5% by weight of a plasticizer, 30-45% by weight of an inorganic filler, and balance a coloring pigment and a reflective agent. The composition may further comprise a thermoplastic resin such as hydrogenated rosin or a rosin-modified maleic acid resin. The resultant paint has improved low temperature stability and improved abrasion resistance and is thus highly resistant to the action of spike tires or tire chains.
Abstract: The ammonium salt of Nigrosine Sulfonic Acid, a novel compound, has been discovered to produce a black flexographic ink with superior water-resistance properties.
Abstract: A liquid ink for use in ink jet printing, comprising a water-based dye, a water-soluble styrene/acrylic copolymer as the sole binder constituent, water and ammonia as a volatile drying conformant.
