The first component is a polymer having a main polymer chain derived from: (i) at least about 30% by weight of a first monomer which introduces at least one of a secondary carbon and a tertiary carbon to the backbone, and (ii) from 0 to about 70% by weight of at least one other monomer. Preferred are ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymers. The second component is a salt of a strong base and a weak acid, the salt comprising a metal selected from Group I of the Periodic Table of Elements. The third component is an antioxidant.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and product that provides a dust-free homogeneous dispersion of zinc diacrylate in polybutadiene for use in golf balls. More specifically, the invention relates to a dispersion of zinc diacrylate in a special high-cis grade of polybutadiene commonly used by golf ball manufacturers. We have found that such a dispersion of ZDA can be made by using specific processing promoters, which not only allow the manufacture of the predispersion, but have a beneficial effect on the final properties of the golf ball. The processing promoters of the present invention enable more uniform dispersion of the ZDA into the polymer matrix, eliminate sticking to the mixer rotors, provide improved extrusion and pelletizing rates, as well as function as a separant to greatly minimize, if not totally eliminate, massing of the pelletized product.

  • Patent number: 6544651
Abstract: The present invention is directed to polymer-ceramic composites having high dielectric constants formed using polymers containing a metal acetylacetonate (acacs) curing catalyst. In particular, it has been discovered that 5 weight percent Co(III) acac can increase the dielectric constant of DER661 epoxy by about 60%. The high dielectric polymers are combined with fillers, preferably ceramic fillers, to form two phase composites having high dielectric constants. Composites having about 30 to about 90% volume ceramic loading and a high dielectric base polymer, preferably epoxy, have been discovered to have a dielectric constants greater than about 60. Composites having dielectric constants greater than about 74 to about 150 are also disclosed. Also disclosed are embedded capacitors with capacitance densities of at least 25 nF/cm2, preferably at least 35 nF/cm2, most preferably 50 nF/cm2. Methods to increase the dielectric constant of the two phase composites having high dielectric constants are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6518339
Abstract: An additive that is used in conjunction with certain dibenzylidene sorbitol-type (DBS) clarifiers and acid scavengers within polyolefin resins to reduce the release of aldehydes from polypropylene material is disclosed. Hydrazides have been shown to be effective at removing residual aldehyde from polyolefins, such as polypropylene. This function can be accomplished with a minimal impact on optical transparent properties imparted to the polypropylene by the clarifying agent. The net effect is an improvement in the organoleptic performance of resins containing clarifiers, and a reduction in the UV-absorbing extractables. Particularly, adipic dihydrazide, when co-compounded into polypropylene homopolymer with 4-methyl DBS, improves the organoleptic performance of the clarifier. Incorporation of dihydrazides into polypropylene pellets reduced air-released aldehyde by nearly 100%.
