Abstract: Methods are provided for making solution masterbatches containing a diene elastomer in an organic solvent and a silica filler, having a first average particle size, that is ground in an organic solvent to form a silica having a reduced second average particle size. Grinding of the silica in the organic solvent, with or without other ingredients including the elastomer, produces a solution masterbatch in which the silica is mixed with and well dispersed in the elastomer. The use of such desolventized solution masterbatches in vulcanizable rubber compounds results in excellent processing characteristics allowing for the reduced use of processing aids such as oil. The compound also demonstrates improved properties, including reduced hysteresis.

  • Patent number: 7790797
Abstract: The adhesive bonding of matted PMMA with customary polymerization adhesives leads to very shiny bond seams, since the cured polymerization adhesives have a shiny surface. This emphasizes the very joining zones which it is intended that the viewer of bonded products should not perceive. The adhesive should therefore be matted after curing. The adhesive has for its basis a polymerization adhesive, preferably a (meth)acrylate-based adhesive. Two different kinds of silica are added as disperse powder to the polymerization adhesive, namely a silica powder having an average particle size of from 1 ?m to 10 ?m (matting agent) and a silica powder having an average particle size of more than 10 ?m up to 200 ?m (texturing agent).

  • Patent number: 7781492
Abstract: The invention involves composite materials containing a polymer foam and an aerogel. The composite materials have improved thermal insulation ability, good acoustic insulation, and excellent physical mechanical properties. The composite materials can be used, for instance, for heat and acoustic insulation on aircraft, spacecraft, and maritime ships in place of currently used foam panels and other foam products. The materials of the invention can also be used in building construction with their combination of light weight, strength, elasticity, ability to be formed into desired shapes, and superior thermal and acoustic insulation power. The materials have also been found to have utility for storage of cryogens. A cryogenic liquid or gas, such as N2 or H2, adsorbs to the surfaces in aerogel particles. Thus, another embodiment of the invention provides a storage vessel for a cryogen.
